Better Than Soprano Summit,

This review is from: Classic Sessions (Audio CD)
If you liked Soprano Summit, you'll love Hot Winds.
Soprano Summit was a marvelous combo in the 1970s. It headlined Bob Wilber and Kenny Davern playing soprano saxophones, clarinets and various other reed instruments. They did not as a rule feature a piano. Their shining light and vocalist was guitarist Marty Grosz. Marty's Hot Winds brings SS to mind. Still no piano. The list of music titles includes more musical treasures than did the Summit of yore, I think because we are spared the treat of long, long solo numbers by the erstwhile principals. Instead you get a varied list of nice, tight performances and plenty of creative give-and-take by everybody. And we get to hear more of Mr. Grosz, who plays beautifully, sings wonderfully and swings the band throughout. Actually, all the players are in Mr. Grosz's groove, good naturedly swinging, horns non-frantic, beautifully balanced over the guitar, with bass and drums lightly kicking things along. Arbors sent me a review copy. I liked it so much I bought a couple more and had them sent to friends and relatives. Something that I virtually never do, except with a gem like this.
