This and not That,

This review is from: The Classic Sherlock Holmes Collection (DVD)
I have not seen this collection yet but I thought some clarification could be in order. This set is an expansion of a previous set released by the same company, Sherlock Holmes Collection, with three additional films included. You'll get 9 films here as opposed to 6 in the other, for about the same price.
No, this is not a complete collection of every Sherlock Holmes film, but it is a nice package of films that have entered into the Public Domain. The films included on this are: With BASIL RATHBONE, who played the role in 14 films for Universal Studios: The Woman in Green (1945) Terror by Night (1946) Dressed to Kill (1946) Sherlock Holmes and the Secret Weapon (1943) With ARTHUR WONTNER, who played the role in 5 films, the second of which is lost: The Triumph of Sherlock Holmes (1935) Murder at the Baskervilles (1937) aka The Silver Blaze The Sign of Four (1932) With RAYMOND MASSEY, his only appearance as Holmes: The Speckled Band (1931) With REGINALD OWEN, his only appearance as Holmes, but had played Watson in an earlier film: A Study in Scarlet (1933) For the price it's a pretty nifty collection and shows what a variety of different actors have done with the role.

1/2 Basil Rathbone and 1/2 why it should have been Basil Rathbone; all very interesting and entertaining. I reccomend this for the fan and anyone who loves old movies; not a bad one in the batch. This is a keeper.

I love the Basil Rathbone - Nigel Bruce duo, the classic Holmes.
Thus far the movie looks like a copy of a copy of a copy. One of those companies who retrieve the film from the public domain and slap it on a DVD without any remastering whatsoever. I don't know if this is the case, but certainly the quality is similar. The viewing is grainy and very low resolution.

This is a good rendition of Sherlock Holmes, This is the one you see on TV late at night. It is black and White and that makes it even better. I am sorry it did not have the story about Holmes in Canada. But I liked all of the other stories and would recommend a buy.

I like all the Holmes movies, even the ones that were cartoons. The real old ones are fun for watching for the way has many different actors portrayed the subject

Basil Rathbone is the best Sherlock. If only he had an intelligent doctor as his sidekick as some other Sherlock have.

My dad grew up with these movies, and for him, Basil Rathbone *is* Sherlock Holmes. Some of our best times are spent watching the old movies he grew up with: Charlie Chan, Sherlock Holmes, etc. I received a $5 gift certificate, so I paid a very low price for nine movies - As I told my dad, he's worth at least a few cents to me. ;)Arthur Wontner simply isn't a very good Sherlock in either my dad's or my opinion. He's not much of an actor, and these movies certainly don't live up to the books they stem from. However, they're nice little slivers of history, and they are enjoyable. The other two non-Rathbone films are much the same. Basil Rathbone brings a little more fun and depth to Holmes, and overall, they're better quality films. I would have paid the same money for just the four Rathbone movies, and it would be worth it. These movies are a little funnier, a little more exciting, and just better-made. However, in several of the movies, guess who plays Watson? Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond! He's also a handsome devil. ;) He's a decent actor, to boot! One thing severely lacking is the film quality. These films haven't been restored and look very "ratty." I hope someone restores these old beauties to their former glory since Sherlock Holmes is making a comeback.

My mother loves old movies/BBC series, and Amazon is the place to find those hard-to-find little gems. Thanks again for doing the work of finding these treasures.

This dvd has very little to do with Basil Rathbone as a star so very disapointing at best. Others portraed Holmes in most events.
