4.0 out of 5 stars A fine example of Sellers' brilliance!, January 2, 2001
By
Jay L. Happel (Iowa City, IA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Classic Songs and Sketches (Audio CD)
The songs and sketches of this disc showcase Peter Sellers' vast range of vocal characterizations, from "Goon Show" regulars Bluebottle and Willum "Mate" Cobblers, to Dr. Strangelove, to a dead-on impression of Laurence Olivier as Richard III. Included on this disc are Sellers' twisted takes on "Hard Day's Night," "Can't Buy Me Love," "All the Things You Are," "Wouldn't It Be Loverly?" and Purcell's "Trumpet Voluntary." Hearing Bluebottle sing "Unchained Melody" was worth the price of the disc alone.

The only thing holding me back to four stars was the lack of any liner notes. Apart from copyright dates on the individual tracks, there is nothing here to tell us anything about the history of these recordings. Still, Sellers fans should enjoy this disc immensely.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hysterically funny takes on Beatles' classics -- plus bonus duet!, July 25, 2007

Peter Sellers was a good friend of the Beatles, and hung out with them during several of their recording sessions. They gave him permission to record their songs, and he does this with his masterful mimicry of ethnic styles, ranging from German to Irish to Indian. "A Hard Day's Night" is a classic -- he gives it a really twisted spin. But my favorite is the duet he did with Sophia Loren, to help publicize their film "The Millionairess". It is pure 60's pop, silly, cute and charming, about an unsuspecting doctor and his patient who's in love with him. It, like the movie it publicizes, is totally dated, but still, fun to have a peek into this era of film and music.

The sketches are kind of silly -- they don't wear well with time. But the music more than makes up for it.

Enjoy -- and be sure to wear your Depends (TM) undergarments, because you're going to be laughing so hard you'll need them!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Funny!, February 18, 2007
This review is from: Classic Songs and Sketches (Audio CD)
It's amazing to me how, when this was recorded, during the early to mid-sixties, the stereo recording quality was so exceptional. George Martin used to produce the Goon Shows before he became a part of the Beatles, and Peter Sellers was a genius. Somewhere in there they made an exceptionally clever, masterfully done, and truly very funny comedic album. Even though some of the paradies are dated, every track is still very, very funny.
