Book Description

7 and up2 and upClassic Starts Series

“We said there was no home like a raft. Other places do seem so cramped up and smothery…but you feel mighty free and easy and comfortable on a raft.” Sail down the Mississippi with Huck Finn and the runaway slave, Jim. Twain’s beloved tale, with its folksy language, creates an indelible image of antebellum America with its sleepy river towns, con men, family feuds, and a variety of colorful characters.

1.0 out of 5 stars Huckleberry Finn, October 26, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Classic Starts: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Classic Starts Series) (Hardcover)
I thought I purchased the real Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain. I did not like the fact that it was a "rewritten" version and I don't think this was made very clear. I woulo have not purchased it if I had known this. I was very disappointed and will probably send this back.

I think this remarkable story is the story of many people now and present. I was just commenting to a friend of mine (I am 69 years old) that if you had had an experience like this as a lad no matter what you did later in life (no matter how successful or wealthy you became), nothing could ever live up to an adventure like that.

I have read the story several times, but wanted my own book. That is why I was so dissapointed that it was a retold version with another author.

5.0 out of 5 stars There's nothing like a classic!, September 27, 2010

I am so happy that I decided to purchase this book. My 8 year-old son and I have made a commitment to read each night, for at least 20 minutes. I decided to start with American classics. We are enjoying this book so much! There is some material in the book that requires explanations but to me, that provides me with teachable moments and conversation starters. This book is helping us discuss many aspects of American history and some serious social issues, not to mention that my son loves making references to things in the book that only he and I understand. I would recommend this book for anyone who is looking for an enjoyable read, whether you're reading as a family or not.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mark Twain Was No Racist, October 15, 2010

This review is from: Classic Starts: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Classic Starts Series) (Hardcover)
Whenever discussing Mark Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, we have to deal with the issue of racism. Mark Twain was not a racist. He used the word nigger so much in order to put a mirror up to the white people of America at the time. Twain used Jim to show that only embracing the slave as a full human being can humanize the slave master. - MTYPENCENTER.COM
