Great series but did they have to change the ending?,

My 8 year old son is an avid reader of the Classic Starts series, and my wife and I find it refreshing to have these "Classics" accessible to young readers. My one objection to this book in particular is the "happy ending" the authors chose. I understand the need for toning down the language to make the book accessible ( I recall when I was 12 I found the original "Man in the Iron Mask" to be dull and almost incomprehensible ) to the young children, but to actually give the novel a Disney-like ending boggles my mind! How do you justify changing the ending of this classic tale of "switched identities" ?
