4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not great
There are 4 puzzle levels: easy, medium, hard and impossible. There are 5 "themes", but these are only background frames. There are settings for error-checking and timing. The numbers are large and boldface, easy to see/read. There is a "flash me" setting for hints if you get stuck. There is no annoying "theme song" to be silenced. The only "sound effects" are beeps for...

2.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the original
With the original version, multiple games could be printed on one sheet of paper to complete at your leisure. In this version, more trees are killed because you only have the ability to print one game per one sheet of paper. Other than that, this game software is what I anticipated and I am satisfied with the product.

The numbers are large and boldface, easy to see/read. There is a "flash me" setting for hints if you get stuck. There is no annoying "theme song" to be silenced. The only "sound effects" are beeps for errors and at completion of the puzzle, but it would be nice to have some kind music or sound when a puzzle is finished correctly. (The bells-drums-shouts at puzzle end on the USAToday and Washington Post online Sudoku games are fun -- a sort of Pavlovian trigger which makes one want to solve another puzzle!) You get good value from this CD version.

This one is the best of what I've tried. It allows you space to put in trials before actually entering the answer. Best of all it doesn't clutter up the program with a lot of extraneous graphics that slow down the program and shrink the playing area. However, it does have nice graphics and a choice of backgrounds so it is a pleasant environment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Of course you can pencil-in candidates, February 18, 2009

In the review given here by Professor he says that CLASSIC SUDOKU does not allow you to "pencil-in" possibilities manually, that the program does that for you. This is not so. You have to add your own possible numbers. The game does not have the automatic "fill-in" feature he mentions. Professor must have been reviewing another Sudoku product and by mistake included it here.

In another game, "TRAVEL GAMES FOR DUMMIES" for the NINTENDO DS, the Sudokus included there do have the option for automatic pencil-in of candidate numbers. It comes handy for the "Hard" and "Very Hard" puzzles. Using it saves a lot of time and allows you to go right into working with the candidate numbers to find the solution.

This CLASSIC SUDOKU software is very good, I am happy with my purchase. However, it could've been better if it had included an automatic pencil-in option of candidates for the harder puzzles.

If this is the same copy as what I have on my on PC I would highly recommend it. The display is very nice and the different levels of play quite accurate. The various features tie in nicely and if you feel like getting into a competition mode, the game "codes" work fine.

I was very disappointed with this CD, as I was hoping for the ability to add and erase my own pencil notes rather than only having the choice of the program adding them or not.
