Biography

Singer-guitarist John Lee Hooker (1917-2001) was one of the most successful blues artists of the second half of the 20th century, yet his hypnotic brand of blues was in many ways a throwback to earlier times, before rules of rhyme, meter, and chord structure became standardized. The Clarksdale, Mississippi-born musician burst on the national scene with his first record, "Boogie Chillen," which… Read more in Amazon's John Lee Hooker Store

5.0 out of 5 stars John Lee Hooker -- The King of Cool, June 22, 2001
This review is from: 15 Classic Tracks (Audio CD)
I just received the news that John Lee Hooker died yesterday.

While there are a lot of musicians who are called "true artists" and "original", Hooker was it, and anyone who is or was "someone" in the music business knew it. If imitation is the sincrest form of flattery, then John Lee Hooker was one of the most flattered musical forces of the 20th Century.

Blues and boogie was his stock and trade. Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, Bruce Spreingsteen, THe Edge (U2), the list is endless... they all paid their respects to Mr. Hooker.

Hooker's best work is here, remastered. I've always had mixed feelings about remastering old blues music; it does preserve the clarity of the original (assuming that the CD is made from original master tapes) but at the same time, it never has the warmth of an old vinyl LP, where the bass fed back through the stylus of the records, making the bass BOMM BOOM BOOM.

However, just for the record, this CD sounds about as good as any you're likely to hear featuring John Lee Hooker.

Killer tracks and then some: a solid sender who's passing is mourned by blues and rock fans everywhere, and a great creative force who will surely be missed. But don't be sad as you mourn his passing, do as The Man says, and have one bourbon, one scotch, one beer...

The world's coolest musician may be gone, but his totally cool music is not.

I don't know if this LIMITED EDITION on BIG EYE MUSIC is the same as the one I got from fot out of CA on PURPLE PYRAMID, but when mine arrived it was the LIMITED EDITION GOLD DISC!!! I see fot has, as of this date, one in the "used" catagory above wich is "FACTORY SEALED"(?!) which MIGHT also be the GOLD DISC. Perhaps, via e-mail, this could be clarified. In any case, this is a MUST HAVE!!! 'Nuf said!

I heard of this for a while (since I got the blues) And was exited to finally hear it. This is a good album if you like Hooker (I do) but if you want to hear some Hogs like Hooker n' Heat showcased Canned Heat (Al Wilson)on the second disc you get nothing. If it wasnt called Hooker & Hogs you would never know Tony Mcphee is there. The sound quality is o.k. (what do you expect I guess) the last Bonus songs sound horrible, but the album is good blues otherwise. Little Dreamer is my highlight for this disc. Even though I like The Groundhogs more than Canned Heat if you dont have Hooker n' Heat or Hooker & Hogs you should get the Heat first, (better sound, chemistry & more songs) but if you have the Heat you should enjoy this.
