This review is from: The Classic Trumpet Concerti Of Haydn And Hummel (Audio CD)
The two great classical trumpet concertos, Haydn and Hummel, are often found on the same record. They were written for the same man, Anton Weidinger, court trumpeter of the Esterhazy family and inveterate tinkerer, seeking to improve the versatility of the natural trumpet. This involved sticking in extra pieces of tubing, operated by keys. The Haydn was written for Weidinger Mk.I. Weidinger improved on that, and the Hummel was written for Weidinger Mk.II.
I was delighted to see this appear in CD, as I've owned and loved the LP for over 25 years. To me, these are the best versions of the two concertos, especially the Hummel, the last movement of which is played with unsurpassable wit, bounce and flair. It even betters the versions of such notables as the greatest classical trumpeter of them all, Maurice André, and that's saying something. Highly recommended.
