Review of Navia's Classical Cynicism,
By
This review is from: Classical Cynicism: A Critical Study (Contributions in Philosophy) (Hardcover)
This is a great introduction to Cynicism written in the only plausible manner -- anecdotally. Navia does a great job of presenting the lives of many major Cynics, and some of the basic principles present in their revolt from social norms. This isn't a text heavy in first or even (directly) secondary sources. It is a review of content presented in doxographical literature, though it doesn't quote this literature. I would love to see a text on the Cynics with doxographical reports, but, for now, this seems to be the best alternative.

This book was wonderfully well written, suitable for those of us not familiar with all the details of philosophy and its characters. I recommend this book to those interested in human history.
