Book Description

November 27, 2004
Three thousand years ago the Greeks built monuments that have come to epitomize Western culture, such as the Parthenon and the Temple of Athena. In this book, a renowned architectural historian reexamines buildings and sites of Greek classical antiquity, not as expressions of pedantic, archaic rules, but as truly innovative paradigms - and shows how they gave rise to modern architecture.

Classical Greek Architecture features fascinating archival photographs, site maps, and architectural plans. It discusses not only the technology but also the myths, rituals, social structures, and political conflicts that left their mark in the ultimate design of a given building. With chapters covering a range of topics from the status of Greek architecture today and the uses of the various types of buildings to the influences of African and Asian cultures on the Greeks, this is a thorough, scholarly, yet accessible work of reference.

5.0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal book!, January 11, 2005
This review is from: Classical Greek Architecture: The Construction of the Modern (Hardcover)
As a practicing architect and also a student of architectural history this is not only one of the best books on the history of Greek architecture, I think it's one of the best books of architectural history published in the last ten years, period. It makes broad sweeps confidently, it has extraordinary close readings of individual works. All are compelling.
And the book it beautiful -- well designed, a beautiful collection of photographs, excellent line drawings. The images and drawings are so good everyone in my office was pouring over this thing all week.
Finally -- it is a compelling argument for the continuing relevance of the greek architectural accomplishment.

4.0 out of 5 stars Classical Greek Architecture - The Construction of the Modern, February 13, 2008
This review is from: Classical Greek Architecture: The Construction of the Modern (Hardcover)
This is quite a good book for classical archaeologists or those who are interested in Classical Greece, but more helpful - I think - is for architects who are keen on ancient greek constructions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible !, April 18, 2008
This review is from: Classical Greek Architecture: The Construction of the Modern (Hardcover)
One of the best books I have ever seen on architecture. I have started building architectural models since my retirement and this book, paired with my old Banister-Fletcher "A History of Architecture", is a fantastic journey and source. At first I missed the dimensions from B-F by then I realized the pure forms must be presented and really reflected upon, BEFORE the model was realized.

The drawings, photos, and layout are so good that it's like sitting down with an old friend. A very welcome "old" friend.
