Book Description

081082809X 978-0810828094 May 23, 1995
If one considers that the Graeco-Roman influence forms the base on which Western literary tradition rests, then this is an essential companion for the student of literature. The comprehensive introduction thoughtfully examines the evolution of classical drama, providing a firm grounding for the student. The works selected include the best-known works of the classical Greek and Roman theatre. The authors and titles reflect those most likely to be found in anthologies, most likely to be reprinted as 'classics' in paperback editions, and most likely to be encountered by the student. The bibliography is arranged alphabetically by author and title. For each author, a general bibliography is included. The citations under each play provide refernces to readily accessible works that offer commentary and criticism. Finally, there are citations pointing the student to the best available translations of these plays.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

This volume adequately fulfills its claim to be a guide to reading and research for undergraduates and general readers. There are, however, shortcomings that could easily have been avoided. First, there are plays for which a translation is recommended but no critical sources are given, e.g., for two of Plautus's better-known plays, Miles Gloriosus and Mostellaria. Second, the introduction states that the book-length criticism is "cross-listed" under both the individual play and the playwright. These repeated citations to the same source add bulk without substance; a brief citation giving appropriate page numbers after the initial entry would have sufficed. Despite these drawbacks, this work meets a need in the study of Greek and Roman drama that has previously gone unsatisfied. A fine tool for undergraduates.

Review

...this work meets a need in the study of Greek and Roman Drama that has previously gone unsatisfied. A fine tool for undergraduates. (Library Journal )

This excellent reference tool should serve high school students, college undergraduates, and autodidacts as well. It has several excellent features. Most importantly, it provides basic translations, commentaries, and criticisms that are readily available in most academic and public libraries... (G.A. Cevasco )

An auspicious first crop for a projected series of ten new volumes a year...Useful for high school and undergraduate students... (Reference and Research Book News )
