This review is from: Classical Journey: Spain (Audio CD)
The single page essay included with DELTA LASERLIGHT's album CLASSICAL JOURNEY: SPAIN claims that musically, until the late-19th Century Spain was practically a province of Italy. Of these compositions that we identify as 'Spanish,' only the first three here were composed by natives-- Bizet ('Carmen') and Chabrier ('Espana') being Frenchmen while Rimsky-Korsakov ('Capriccio Espagnol') was Russian.

For what it's worth however, Italian-born soundtrack writer Ennio Morricone's early spaghetti western scores may have been inspired by Rodrigo, so in recent years the trend seems to have gone the other way. A good example of this is "Ecstasy of Gold" from his THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY album.

The Albeniz piece is performed by two competent guitarists and as such has a fine lilting feel. The four featured orchestras appear on any number of DELTA CDs and are always a delight to listen to. To single out one, the Hungarian State unit does marvelously on a sixteen minute "Capriccio."

Finally, these DDD recordings have uniformly excellent sound. Recommended!
