Book Description

0198162952 978-0198162957 June 8, 1995 1St Edition
A "hidden" instrument in the classical music world, the mandolin's repertoire of original music remains largely unknown. This book examines the lives and works of the mandolin's great composers and, together with Sparks's earlier The Early Mandolin (Oxford 1989), provides the first comprehensive survey of the instrument's history. The book also explores aspects of technique and looks at present-day orchestras and soloists.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classical Mandolin Book, July 20, 2010

This book is a winner to me, as one who is devoted to furthering my knowledge of how the mandolin has come to be from 1815 to the recent present. This book is not for the casual reader, but for the interested reader it is well written as a work of considerable scholarship. Paul Sparks has a doctorate in mandolin, and that says it all. As a fellow doctorate in another discipline, I can appreciate the extensive garnering of materials which remain scattered abroad. He has genuinely contributed to my playing and comprehension of this dear little instrument.
