Book Description

9812382194 978-9812382191 August 2004 2
The topics treated in this book are essentially those that a graduate student of physics or electrical engineering should be familiar with in classical electromagnetism. Each topic is analyzed in detail, and each new concept is explained with examples. The text is self-contained and oriented toward the student. It is concise and yet very detailed in mathematical calculations; the equations are explicitly derived, which is of great help to students and allows them to concentrate more on the physics concepts, rather than spending too much time on mathematical derivations. The introduction of the theory of special relativity is always a challenge in teaching electromagnetism, and this topic is considered with particular care. The value of the book is increased by the inclusion of a large number of exercises.

5.0 out of 5 stars A rigorous look at E&M, with all the steps included, December 13, 1999
In the introduction, DiBartolo notes that one of the motivations for the style of this book comes from the well known hatred students have for the common use of the "it can be shown" phrase in physics textbooks. This book responds to this complaint with a vengance; the derivations are provided in lavish detail, with so few mathematical steps between lines that one can literally read along them. As far as a general level of the text book, it is aimed at first year graduate students, and is fairly comprehensive.

This review is from: Classical Theory of Electromagnetism (Paperback)
This is a fine and and carefully written book, now in its second edition. Formulas, calculations, and figures say more than words, and there are quite a few of them here. Full solutions to odd numbered exercises take up more than 170 pages. The emphasis in on particles and fields, and relativity; electromagnetism in matter plays a smaller role. Relativity is done with ict for the fourth component of an event vector, which is a bit old fashioned perhaps. There are few misprints. Recommended to advanced undergraduates or graduate students.
