Classics by Don McLean

Customer Reviews

What a wonderful singer.
Shalom Freedman
In my opinion, the remakes are generally not as good as the originals, missing their original smoothness and flow.
Kurt A. Johnson
Also, the SOUND is very ANALOG.

This CD is false advertizing. I bought it expecting to be getting some of Don McLean's classics. Instead, what I got were only 3 originals and 7 re-dos. The package of the CD doesn't warn you about this and the title "Classics" implies that inside are the classic versions. The re-do of "Vincint" is slow like a funeral procession with a different guitar arrangement. Songs 8 and 9 are extremely boring. If you want classic Don McLean, buy one of his other releases.

For someone mildly to moderately interested in the music of Don McLean, "Classics" will provide just about anything the listener desires. The original versions of "American Pie", "Crying", "Since I Don't Have You", "Castles in the Air", and "Jerusalem" are all here. For the ardent McLean fan, the album's value is in the new version of "And I Love You So" and a moving new rendition of "Vincent", in which McLean displays a more mature and developed voice than in the 1972 original. Rounding out the album are the lesser-known "It's a Beautiful Life" and a forgettable new version of "Pie". All in all, though, any fan of Don McLean will enjoy this album. END

Don McLean is one of the finest artists ever. This album does not reflect that. Seven alternate takes. The worst one is Vincent. The main line is screwed up, and many songs are totally out of rhythm. Don't Buy this.

Add the reviewer from Phoenix to a growing list of collectors who have learned to avoid just about anything associated with Curb.

As they did with their Sammy Davis, Jr., Bobby Darin, and Vikki Carr cheapo CDs they not only leave off some bona fide hits, but provide alternate takes on three others - Vincent, Castles In The Air, And I Love You So. The last, incidentally, was the B-side to his first version of Castles In The Air which, as his first hit, reached # 40 on the Adult Contemporary charts in 1971 for the Mediarts label. As the flipside to the original Vincent in 1972, the same version of Castles In The Air this time was a follow-along pop hit.

What we do not get here are: Dreidel [# 7 AC/# 21 Billboard Pop Hot 100 in early 1973]; If We Try [# 12 AC/# 58 Hot 100 in April 1973]; Fool's Paradise [the Buddy Holly 1958 hit which, for McLean, topped out at # 25 AC/# 107 Hot 100 "bubble under" in March 1974]; and Wonderful Baby [his tribute to Fred Astaire which reached # 1 AC and # 93 Hot 100 in June 1975].

Just one more in a long list of Curb products to avoid like the plague.

This album opens with the strangely paradoxically upbeat ' American Pie'. This is perhaps Don McLean's most popular song. In the second song McLean sings a slower more mature and clear version of his remarkable 'Vincent'.This is the finest popular song about an artist I know of. It does capture something of the essence of Van Gogh's life and work. The third song is another of McLean's classics' And I Love you so'.
I am not enough of a maven to compare the versions of the songs here to those in other collections. But I find the music here beautiful, inspiring, joy- giving.
What a wonderful singer.

Like so many others, I long knew Don McLean only as the singer of "American Pie," a sort of rock/country fusion song of the '70s that was reportedly a tribute to deceased musician Buddy Holly. While the lyrics were symbolic to the point of confusion, they were also incredibly catchy and evocative, and I fell in love with the song and found myself singing it repeatedly... and cursing the radio stations that would always play truncated versions of the song or, even worse, Madonna's deplorable cover. I purchased the sheet music to the song, and even bought one of "Weird" Al Yankovic's album solely because it contained an "American Pie" parody ("The Saga Begins," his riff on both McLean's classic and the first "Star Wars" prequel film).

I received this CD as a gift in high school, and I still own it today. Not only does it contain a full-length original version of the song I loved as a child and teen, it introduced me to other songs by the artist, songs I have grown to love as well.

In addition to the aforementioned "American Pie," this collection of classics also contains his other famous hit "Vincent," commonly referred to as "Starry, Starry Night." As some might have guessed, it's McLean's tribute to the artist Vincent Van Gogh, and a thoughtful, often melancholy musing on how brilliant artists and thinkers are seldom appreciated in their own time. I've since learned that this version isn't the same version that many remember from the radio, but I still enjoy it very much.

Other favorites on this album are "Castles In the Air," "It's Just the Sun," and "Jerusalem." They're all thoughtful songs that have had quite a bit of thought put into the lyrics, and are pleasant to listen to.

The title of this album is quite misleading. Instead of being a compilation of Don McLean’s classic tunes, it is actually a mix of a few classics and a group of studio remakes. In my opinion, the remakes are generally not as good as the originals, missing their original smoothness and flow. To make matters worse, the album includes both the original AND a new version of American Pie, which makes comparison between the two versions inevitable.

It is nice to hear some newer tunes from Don McLean (this album was originally released in 1992), who is a great singer and musician, but I do wish that this “Classics” album was made of less remakes.
