Classic Motown Tech.,
By aL (Melbourne, Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Classics (Audio CD)
This a slamming yet funky set of 80's electro style techno. Recommended for both pasty suburbanite synth fetishists and those who like techno they can feel (dare I say it this has soul or something approaching it). If you are someone who has written off electronic music as 'soulless', peep this album right here. Juan Atkins along with Derrick May, Carl Craig, and those zany Germans Mouse on Mars are part of a handful of techno artists who make music that really communicates something 'human'(?) to the listener. That is the genius of their music and why so much other electronic muzak is just a soundtrack to an automaton's nightclub/cafe d-elevator ride to oblivion. Put this one of a feel the vibe flow through, funk not only moves, it can re-move. Dig?

The stuff the was and is still listened to in Chicago,

This era of electronic music is a classic one definitely, as the music (especially "No U.F.0") has been on regular airplay in Chicago's Little Village/Pilsen Hispanic neighborhoods since the song came out back in the early 80's. Many original copies of the record are still floating around the neighborhoods. My only gripe about this CD is that there are a buncha remixes, and not enough original versions of the song. Other than that, this is the music that 60-70 y/o's are gonna be listening to in 40 years with nostalgia.

Space Techno. Techno Soul. Detroit Techno. Whatever you call it, Deep Space is the absolute definition of its form during the 1990's. Starting with the collaboration with Kevin Saunderson "Milky Way", which is utterly fantastic, and including "The Flow" (wonderful vocal techno), "Astralwerks" (slow downbeat jazz-soul lovelyness), and finally "I Wanna Be There" which is possibly the track of the album - Deep Space is a must have for any self-respecting Techno fan (or for that matter - anyone that loves electronic music). At once it is straight on tech-soul (Milky Way), then minimal (Orbit), then jazzy (Astralwerks). It is without doubt a perfect record. Simply amazing stuff.

Well what ca be said that more succincly describes this than the title. Juan Atkins is one of the founders of this music we know as techno, any serious study of dance music must include his work, and here they are the early singles all in one package. Check it out! Very difficult to find as well it shows how complete Amazon's resourses are.

Not much to say here except that Hector has is right, and this recording is unmissable. If you can find this get it - Classics is _the_ perfect example of early Detroit Techno Soul. Standout trax- Off To Battle, and No UFOs. Also look out for Atkins' work under the Infiniti name.

Classics: Some clarification,

Forgetting for the moment that the state of R&S Records is still unknown - and reissues of these (and ALL of Sun Electrics') albums doesn't seem likely - I feel I should say that this album DOES deserve its name, and is definitely worth tracking down for anyone who has the slightest interest in electro, and old-school techno (especially of the Detroit-ian kind). Every cut on here is a pioneering classic, and thoroughly danceable despite the similarly old-school prodution! (well, I prefer to ignore Electric Entourage, as the "chacka chaaa" sample is severely overused, and is incredibly annoying. Also, unlike EVERY other track on the album, it lacks a decent hook, melody or bassline!) It's interesting to note that there are quite a few remixes on here, instead of originals, although I feel that works in the album's favour - many of the original versions are inferior, not as well arranged, far less "fleshed out" etc (the original Off To Battle was actually very disappointing - the remix is one of my favourite M500 tracks). E-bay and London record stores are probably your best bet for finding this treasure. It IS worth it, although I would argue that Sonic Sunset and Deep Space are superior albums (but more techno-orientated... YMMV). Just please do NOT go near Mind & Body. It's awful. |
