Book Description

June 21, 2004 0534631568 978-0534631567 6
Compiled by the most influential authors in the field, CLASSICS OF ORGANIZATION THEORY is a collection of the most enduring works in organization theory. Designed for those new to the field, the text helps students grasp the important themes, perspectives, and theories of the field by describing what organization theory is, how it has developed, and how its development has coincided with developments in other fields. This text is not simply a retelling of the history of organization theory, its evolution is told through the words of the distinguished theorists themselves.

Review

"The chapter introductions are excellent and provide students with a very good overview of the different schools of organization theory"

"I admire this book tremendously and depend upon it extensively. I greatly appreciate their lively, informative chapter introductions and astute selections of writings on organization theory."

"The introductions do an excellent job of connecting the various readings together, providing a logic for each section ... The organization is strong, as a whole this is an excellent reader."

4.0 out of 5 stars Delivers what it says...., March 14, 2000
By
I used this book (actually the 3rd edition) in preparing for my comprehensive exams for my master's degree. The title is descriptive. The book is short excerpts of key writings on the organization theory. The selection of readings is appropriate. The only complaint I have is that sometimes I wished I had the complete book in question! On the other hand, some of this stuff is really dry. If you are pursuing the field in an academic way, this is a valuable book. But I can't imagine reading it for enjoyment or idle curioisity.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Collection Of Classics Of Organizational Theory, May 3, 2010
By
This review is from: Classics of Organization Theory (with InfoTrac) (Paperback)
This is another collection of readings that illustrate the intellectual development of an academic discipline. Organization theory is a discipline that is important to understanding how the building blocks of modern society work and how that shapes the behavior of those members within each organization. The readings are representative of what happened in the development of this literature. You also are treated to some commentary explaining why what happened did and explanation for each development. All in all, a great book.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Classics of Organization Theory (with InfoTrac) (Paperback)
This book is the same book that was suggested on my syllabus for my graduate Management Theory class, but was a whole lot cheaper online! It arrived in a very timely mannner - and its soft cover!

The introductons are the best because it overs a clear overview of the each section - some of the outdated writing of the articles can be a bit tough to read through - so the intro's help a lot.
