From the Author

As a student reading classics had a profound effect on my creativity, imagination and writing skills. When I started teaching from the first year of college, I introduced classics to my students.  I implemented the same techniques and methods of teaching with my students and saw the difference in them. I taught English Literature and English Language besides History to the students of the 9th and 10th grade at a prestigious ICSE school in Mumbai, and followed the same methods of teaching. I have a B.A. degree in History and Sociology and a B. Ed. Degree in Education, my special subjects being English and History. I wish to share my knowledge, techniques and methods of teaching with Parents, Teachers and students. With the aid of this book, I want to propagate the importance of classics to everyone, every student, parent and teacher. Through this book I shall introduce to you the various classics that have influenced me, the different skills one can develop by reading good literature and how sometimes good fiction makes reality a lot more tolerable.

I found this book great fun and motivational to read and think others will too. Fiza Pathan states her case with passion, personality and precision. It is based on her own teaching experience, feedback from her students and their success stories. The book is full of wise, easy-to-follow tips, lists and examples.Teachers will want to try out her original techniques for stimulating English classes. Parents and grandparents will rush to the book store, or upload their e-readers with free classics. New insights show how to help children see the sky's the limit, get better grades, be articulate in writing and conversing, and grow up to be happy people. Pathan`s prescription of reading a classic once a week (or at least once a month) is one I'm ready to take. At 23 years of age, Pathan is on a roll with this her third book. She lives in Mumbai, India and reflects the vibrant, booming environment there for readers and writers. This book is only 90 pages long but can do a lot to rejuvenate not just literacy but humanity also.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Guide for Students, Parents and Teachers July 20, 2013
Format:Paperback
It was a real pleasure to read Fiza Pathan's book. She is enthusiastic about this topic and with good reason, as the success of her students show. Teacher colleagues have the benefit to use her techniques for stimulation of their English classes.

Reading a classic book per week is a surefire way of improving student's (and maybe parents?) English writing and conversion style - challenged by today's SMS (short messages)usage.

I liked her quote: "Books are the bees which carry the quickening pollen from one to another mind". That was for me the essence of her work in class rooms and in writing this guide for students and educators.

I am thankful for the helpful, well-rounded list of classic books and their authors in the Bibliography part at the end of her book. Quite a few of them are free as their copyright already expired - good news for parents and teachers - and everyone else who is interested in our rich classic literature. To all of them: I whole-heartily recommend Fiza Pathan's book, it is a pleasure to read these lively persuasion in a non-fiction book.

BTW, it is available as e-book too: B00DUVZ3GW

It's a great book explaining why classic novels are important in fostering reading in children. I think this is a good kick start book for middle school age children. Excellent promotion of childhood literacy, well written and factual.

3.0 out of 5 stars A good introduction October 8, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a fabulous and short introduction to the value of classics in a child's education. It contains many suggestions for what to read for what benefit to the child and this is what gave it three stars from me. The suggested books even had a few that I haven't read or put on my children's reading list. If this was the first book I had read on classics I probably would have rated it 5 stars. It is considered, engaging and covers all you really need to know. Personally it wants new information to me entirely but did provide some new perspectives to consider.
