This is the follow-up to the well-received Brubeck Brothers Quartet's Intuition (Koch, 2006), which spent three months in the jazz top 20. There are some obvious similarities: Classified is also unusually bountiful, weighing in at over 78 generous minutes; the band (aka the BBQ) features three of the same stellar players, now with regular touring partner Chuck Lamb rather than wunderkind Taylor Eigsti at the piano; and the music is uniformly excellent in its composition, execution, and recording quality. Now for the details.
The title reflects the fact that Classified embraces some classical instrumentation: specifically, the three delightful movements of Chris Brubeck's "Vignettes for Nonet" are played by the BBQ and Imani Winds, the Grammy-nominated reed quintet. But one of the many remarkable things about this CD is that when the jazz and classical are merged, you hear no seams: instead, the two simply melt into each other in a surprisingly natural way.
Other notable elements: the classy choices of pianist/composer Chuck Lamb; the flowing lines of guitarist/composer Mike DeMicco; Chris Brubeck's sly wit on trombone, fretless bass, and composition; and Dan Brubeck's distinctive drumming, which somehow manages to be full of swing and space at the same time, his exciting solos at the end of "Good Question" and "Eclipse," for example. Favorite tracks: the warm bossa, "Dance of the Shadows," the playful "Nonet," the mysterious "7th Sense" (original title: "The Seven Seas of Captain Voodoo"), the soulful "Friends Beyond Time," and that familiar, much-beloved closer, which in this treatment could get a slight name shift, to "Blues Rondo a La Turk."
Once again the BBQ attains that rarefied level where music is both relaxed and expressive, and their joy in its creation is contagious. There's really nothing out there that comes close to their unique brand of inventiveness. - Dr. Judith Schlesinger, AllAboutJazz.com

Five stars. This set is perfectly dialed in and every moment is wonderful. Great compositions, superbly clean playing, and bubbling forward motion. Everything that the best aspire to. Plus, on this outing, a wind Quintet. A Quintet who wants to expand its repertoire beyond classical with a Quartet who wants to take jazz further. The writers/performers of the Brubeck Brothers Quartet are ready. To my thinking this record has three sections. The first seven tracks are the Quartet's compositions closed out beautifully by Friends Beyond Time. The second section has Quartet with Quintet playing a commissioned piece by Chris Brubeck called Vignettes for Nonet. Classical/jazz in a very animated setting in three movements. The guest Quintet is called Imani Winds. Everything melds well between the two groups and is sonically well balanced. The third section of the program functions as an Encore--elder statesman Dave Brubeck's Blue Rondo a la Turk. By the by, the guitarist here, Mike DeMicco, is a treasure. Clean round tone, excellent speed, and a superb traditional jazz guy. Chuck Lamb, the pianist, has a light touch and compositional savvy. The Brothers, of course, trained at their Father's knee have the whole thing going. Dan is drummer phenom, Chris plays trombone and bass--a Rickenbacker no less. Composes high level material. I've spent some time with this disc and it's been an education. My son and I attended one of their concerts in 2008 and got to meet and talk with the Brubeck brothers who were quite gracious and autographed our disc. In my current working collection this record is always in the top. Exquisite album.

Okay, I'm writing this somewhat out of the blue right now. I've recently completed building a new set of speakers so I'm digging out stuff I haven't listened to for a while.

There is a lot to like about this CD and the sound quality is above par but in line with many other great jazz recordings. But the music always comes first no matter the quality of the source otherwise.

So why do I title this "Good but..."? Strangely, the drums.

Yes, there is no doubt Dan is an accomplished drummer, I only wish on a few tracks of this CD he would have laid back a little and played less. He is technically on the mark but also seems a bit stiff at times. A bit of timing push or retardation without being so busy while maintaining the very solid beat as he does, especially on the swing stuff, may have sounded more natural and organic and alleviated the feeling of being played by sight from sheet music. This is simply an opinion based on my taste so please accept it as that. Some of this criticism may be born from the closely miked drums which accentuate the high-hat and cymbals, and it's particularly a lonely splash panned hard right that can get old after a while.

There are some great performances, drums included, especially in the latter tracks that are quite tasty. Overall this CD is certainly worth checking out.

I bought this album after seeing the quartet live in a very intimate setting (a church auditorium that seats about 200 people). They blew me away, and this album has been a pleasant and consistent reminder of just how great this quartet is. I love the entire album, but the drums stand out for some reason, I can't get over how he sets the tone for the upbeat pieces and lays low during the softer ones. Listening to this at work calms me down and makes me more productive at the same time.
