Editorial Reviews

James Booker was an unheralded genius of American music, a New Orleans pianist whose dizzying technique and mastery of the keyboard was matched only by his imagination and his soulfulness. His short and often flamboyant life was also marked by struggle and lost opportunity. Classified, recorded in October, 1982, was one of only two studio albums released during his lifetime, and this remixed and expanded edition offers a poignant and often surprising look at his music, for if James Booker is often cited in the piano lineage that passes from Jelly Roll Morton to Professor Longhair to his own student, Harry Connick, Jr., New Orleans tradition was only his jumping-off point.

These 22 tracks, which include 9 never-before-released performances, range from the pure rhythm and blues of Grits Ain t Groceries, to the classical Warsaw Concerto and Madame X, to his astonishing version of the jazz standard Angel Eyes. Whether playing solo or accompanied by saxophonist Alvin Red Tyler, bassist James Singleton and drummer Johnny Vidacovich, Booker ties together a giddy array of musical influences with virtuosity and an often quirky sense of humor. Included are new notes by co-producer Scott Billington, and several new photographs. It is also worth noting that Lily Keber s film, Bayou Maharajah, The Tragic Genius of James Booker, has been playing to rave reviews, and that interest in James Booker is expanding beyond his devoted cult fan base.

5.0 out of 5 stars Last But Not Least March 6, 2007
Format:Audio CD
I saw James Booker perform in a little hole in the wall bar in 1983 New Orleans. He had this album propped up on the piano while he played to a very small crowd, yet he played as if he were playing to thousands of people. James Booker enjoyed playing music, and he did it as well as anyone. This would be the last album he would record, and it's one of his best...We spoke while he was on break, and he tried to convince me to buy a copy, but I had just spent my last few bucks buying drinks. He said "take it anyway, and if you like it pay me the next time you see me". Well I went home, put it on, and needless to say, it was all good; from the first cut to the last. James Booker died three weeks later, and I never had the opportunity to go back and pay him, or to thank him for his kindness. I'll be forever indebted to him, not only for the album, but for the memory of that time, and for the story that ultimately came with it. Give James Booker a listen and you'll be rewarded, I promise....

5.0 out of 5 stars King of the Keyboard March 9, 2001
Format:Audio CD
Dr. John and Harry Connick Jr. both acknowledge Booker as the greatest of New Orleans piano players. So who are we to argue? The beauty of music in New Orleans has always been the blurring of musical categories: blues, jazz (both traditional and modern), r&b, gospel, and Caribbean-infected funk were and are played in the Crescent City by the same great artists who also happen to be great entertainers. It's a gumbo town. And no one embodied this gumbo spirit better and with more virtuosity than James Booker. He could play it all, including classical, separately, at the same time, or all at the same time! I think this is Booker's best studio recording, and it is true that the version of "King of the Road" on this record is by itself worth the price -- trascendent.

4.0 out of 5 stars better than its reputation June 10, 1999

this album has often been described by critics as haphazard and in many ways unfinished. that may or may not be the case, but check it out for yourself, there are plenty of golden gems here. i bet you a dollar or two that roger miller's "king of the road" will never be the same ever again to anyone who hears booker's far out version...

4.0 out of 5 stars There is no bad Booker February 22, 2014
By Max
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
I give James Booker's "Bayou Maharaja" and "Spiders on the Keyboard" 5 stars. They are my favorite Booker. Confession: I'm in love with New Orleans piano, James Booker, and even the idea of James Booker. His was a rough life. My diagnosis: as with many alcolholics and addicts, I suspect that mental illness preceded the drug use and the drug use started as self-medication. No medical degrees are behind this diagnosis, just personal experience. The later Booker ("Maharaja" and "Spiders") sounds to me like the real Booker-stripped of any producer, just Booker playing for Booker, live and near the end of his life.
"Classified" strikes me as Booker plus a producer in the studio. Not the same feel as Booker live, but ripping and rolling all the same. A taste of his classical training is thrown in ("Warsaw Concerto"), and you get the complete Booker experience. The 4 stars for "Classified" versus 5 stars is completely subjective; there is no bad Booker.
