3.0 out of 5 stars 4Canter's Classroom Management
Haven't been able to put any of Canter's theories into practice, so really can't say. I know there are many for his ideas as well as against. Personally, I feel it must be a balance of many that work best for the classroom. Has lots of pages to copy and use, which is nice. . . .

A detailed curriculum guide for teaching appropriate, responsible behavior has been needed for so long but has not been available--until now. As Harry Wong said, "The number one problem in education is not discipline. It is the lack of procedures and routines resulting in students not knowing what to do-responsibly-in the classroom." Canter's book addresses this need in a systematic and detailed way. In the many books on classroom management that I've read, I've never encountered a more teacher-friendly book that explains exactly what adequately teaching expectations looks like. I wish I had had this book as a brand-new teacher, but, as a five-year "veteran," I'm glad to have it now. I can hardly wait to see my classroom management transformed by Canter's guidelines.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just what I needed, July 15, 2008
This review is from: Classroom Management for Academic Success (Paperback)
This volume combines information from other works by the author and organizes it into an easy to use workbook. It takes you step-by-step through the process of setting up a well-planned classroom. This is not a book of bulletin board ideas or teaching tricks, but how to be a caring, professional, and most importantly, effective teacher for all your students, not just the easy ones. There were three basic ideas that made it work for me. First, the explanation of the reasoning behind different student behaviors and a teacher's typical responses was eye-opening. Secondly, the very logical and detailed way to change your responses by having a different mindset and a plan to handle things made a lot of sense, and actually clarified for me why some teachers don't have a problem with difficult students. The third and most practical help was in samples: sample situations, sample responses, and sample plans. I am looking forward to implementing many of these ideas into my classes this coming year.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent classroom resource, July 12, 2007

This review is from: Classroom Management for Academic Success (Paperback)
This book is very user-friendly. The text flows and it is not overly wordy, as some teacher resource material can be. The book offers a no non-sense approach to classroom management. There are numerous reproducibles and transparency models available. Great read, with great ideas!

4.0 out of 5 stars Classroom Management Workbook, January 13, 2012

This review is from: Classroom Management for Academic Success (Paperback)
Lee Canter echoes the words of Harry Wong in this book regarding the importance of teaching procedures in the first two weeks of school. However, Canter takes this a bit further by creating a step-by-step instruction manual of what to teach and when. Include throughout the text and on the CD are reproducible pages for the teacher's convenience. Some of these are a simplistic outline of the procedures for a certain portion of your day. Others are blank worksheets for the teacher to work through to discover his/her own theories.

The book starts of with information on why it is important to manage a classroom successfully (to increase academic performance and decrease stress) and goes on to explain Canter's Behavior Management cycle and how a teach can influence and expect appropriate behavior in the classroom.

The remainder of the book focuses on creating lesson plans for the first 10 days of school that focus on teaching different types of procedures each day and reviewing them throughout the week. A sample schedule is provided for you. In addition to the procedures taught, teachers will need to add their own academic requirements for these first few days. Each procedure is clearly defined and sample procedures that you are welcome to alter are given as examples. This 'road-map' help me as a novice teacher understand all the many different types of procedures that would be needed. As a veteran teacher, perhaps some of this is a refresher to you but for many this is now simply part of your routine and classroom culture. Procedures taught in this book include: working individual, with a buddy, in groups, at centers, sitting on a rug, class discussions, attention getting signals, in and out of seat transition, walking in line, leaving the classrooms, emergencies, starting and ending the day, going to pull out programs, lining up, lunch and recess, and more.

Additional information provided in the text includes a 2-week turn around program for students who are continual off task and a rules and polices section. This section includes topics on classroom rules, positive feedback, corrective actions, bringing materials to class, using materials, student comfort issues, student jobs, and more.

Usually I want to sell all of my textbooks back, however I love the idea of keeping this book for future reference. As a future educator, this a great tool because it refers to many different philosophies and there is something that would work for everyone. Great resource.... And the best price right here on Amazon!!!

I bought this as it was required for a course I was taking at university.

I found myself having difficulty getting through the text - probably because it was a lot of hypothetical situations and pre-established scenarios with action plans created.

This book seems to be beneficial for the student teacher and the new teacher, as well as for the experienced one who needs a reminder.

Because every learner is as unique as his or her educator is, this could possibly pigeonhole teachers into using what the book prescribes.

Overall, this was a good outline. I just found it lacked challenge for me. A lot of the students in the course really like it and plan on dog-earring it over the next thirty years.
