5.0 out of 5 stars Classroom Management in Photographs
As a new teacher I found this book VERY useful. As the author, Maria L. Chang, notes in her introduction the saying about a picture being worth a thousand words is true. I too photographed classrooms and hallway displays during my student teaching period and drew diagrams of ideas when I attended workshops at other schools (and forgot to bring a camera). I purchased this book with the idea that it would help me set up my room. As a first year 4th-grade teacher, I needed all the help I could get. I will be using many of the ideas presented in Ms. Chang's book.
I also enjoyed reading the mini-bios on the teachers who were kind enough to allow her to take the photos and share their comments.
Teachers awaiting the arrive of this book could also check out the following Web site in the mean time:
http://mspowell.00freehost.com
I found it through a link on the discussion forum of TeacherChat. This veteran teacher has taken the time to photograph her classroom setups (she did a 360 as she snapped her room so you get a good idea of size and layout) and some of the classrooms of other teacher's at her school. She also shares some good tips on classroom management, etc.

I purchased this book with the idea that it would help me set up my room. As a first year 4th-grade teacher, I needed all the help I could get. While some ideas were useful, the actual classroom setup photos were not, since the author primarily featured classrooms that have enough space for a huge classroom libraries and for amenities like author couches and large rug areas. Unfortunately, when you are teaching in a portable classroom (or as we like to call it -- the trailer park) which are present in most of NYC public schools, space is definitely limited and we don't have luxuries as the featured schools. Some of the featured schools are located in the wealthiest neighborhoods in NYC -- Greenwich Village and Beekman Hill in Manhattan and Park Slope in Brooklyn. So while this book is helpful for those who teach in classrooms with loft-style space, perhaps the author should try to include pictures of classrooms in schools located in Bushwick, Flatbush, Harlem and the South Bronx, where teachers are given rooms that are considerably smaller than the ones portrayed in the book, and where we still manage to teach over 31 students to a class.

I was thrilled to see this book at the store but it cost $25!! I'm glad that I was able to find an alternative by browsing amazon for $8 and my purchase arrived right on time!

The contest of the book is very helpful, specially to a lot of new teachers. You can gather a lot of ideas from it. However, for seasoned teachers, there are a few that the book can offer but not much. The routines and idea of set up is great, however, most of the pictures featured very cluttered classrooms.

The book does not offer a variety of classroom set ups either. It does not cater to bigger classrooms or classroom in challenging neighborhoods.

As promising as this book can be, there is a lot of room for improvement.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Practical Ideas, August 3, 2008
This review is from: Classroom Management In Photographs (Paperback)
This is about 95 full color pages of classroom ideas. Everything from storage to procedures to management. Pictures of actual classrooms are explained with lengthy captions describing how each method or idea is used. I am going to use many of these ideas in my kindergarten classroom so for me it was really helpful and worth the money.

1.0 out of 5 stars Save Your $$$ and Walk Around Your Own School, July 23, 2004
This review is from: Classroom Management In Photographs (Paperback)
I was highly disappointed with this book. I am a visual person who is always looking for new ideas. I take great care in putting my classroom together each fall. The rooms in the photos looked dirty, often cluttered and the items shown seemed to be put together in a matter of seconds. The ideas highlighted can be found in any classroom in any school in any town. They were far from new or interesting.

Perhaps as a first year teacher it may be helpful, but if you have any exposure to an elementary school just tour the building, talk to the your coworkers and save yourself the money.

I am one that loves to look at other teachers' classrooms for new and creative ideas. I thought that is what I would be getting from this book. However, I found this book to be full of cluttery classrooms and old ideas. I am very disappointed with the book.

Great for all teachers, from graduates to experienced teachers. The difference between this book and many others is the photographs. Actually seeing pictures of the concept in practice is invaluable in terms of providing some ideas for how you might be able to use similar concepts in your own classrooms Classroom Management In Photographs

This is a GREAT resource. I implemented a few of the ideas. It is just so helpful to see the ideas in action. I'm hoping a book like this comes out with ideas specified for certain grade levels. Great book. Must buy!!
