1.0 out of 5 stars A deatiled book for use only on an "as needed" basis.
I'm very disappointed in this book, although some information IN it is valuable, it will take a long time to read the entire book cover to cover. It is an excellent Textbook but not a handy guide to flip to on a regular basis and find ideas for what you need. Although broken into sections, they are not readily found or visible. It's designed so that you can pick and choose from among the smorgasbord of ideas to find exactly what you need for your unique classroom situation.

This second edition specifically addresses the changes that have occurred in education since the first edition was published: the standards-based, high-stakes testing environment, the role of the Internet in learning, the increase on the time demands of teachers, and the call for greater teacher accountability.

It's great for both beginning and experienced teachers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best practices for all teachers, September 18, 2005
By
Easy to read with many bulleted points, this book is helpful to first-year teachers as well as those who have been teaching for longer. I find that every now and then I need to look at something new to re-energize myself for better planning and more effective teaching. This book does that. It offers best practices in behavior management, time management, lesson planning, effective teaching, and assessment. It also contains helpful lists of professional organizations, professional journals, computer software sources, and instructional materials suppliers. While other authors spend so much time focusing on procedures, this author gives you helpful procedural information but focuses on explaining how you can build relationships with students and make learning an active endeavor. He even encourages you to smile while you're doing it.

This review is from: Classroom Teachers Survival Guide: Practical Strategies, Management Techniques, and Reproducibles for New and Experienced Teachers (J-B Ed: Survival Guides) (Paperback)
I'm very disappointed in this book, although some information IN it is valuable, it will take a long time to read the entire book cover to cover. It is an excellent Textbook but not a handy guide to flip to on a regular basis and find ideas for what you need. Although broken into sections, they are not readily found or visible. One must search the information needed as in a research assignment. The reproducibles are MAINLY for elementary grades. This was not stated in the very short and brief summary of it's contents, on-line. Although the price was reasonable, I'm not pleased with the way the book is organized & printed.

This review is from: Classroom Teachers Survival Guide: Practical Strategies, Management Techniques, and Reproducibles for New and Experienced Teachers (J-B Ed: Survival Guides) (Paperback)
I would recomend this to any other teacher who can read. I am a new teacher myself and need some help here and there (oh there I go humoring myself again, I need help all the time)and this book sugests how to handel everyday problems and many other necessary things!! I love the part labeled "coping with the Daily Stresses of Teaching" and it also tells information like getting parents involed which can be terribly hard to get going!!
It has many good reproducibles that can be used anytime!!! I also just can't get over how well the spiral-bound book is so easy to tote! I again would recomend this to any teacher that can read!!!!!!! To sum it is I feel I don't need to say more than "Great Book"!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for all but especially special education teachers, June 7, 2008
This Classroom Teacher's Survival Guide has such eclectic utility that one could use it for substituting, teaching regular education, teaching teachers to teach and for me I have used it numerous times in special education. No matter if you are new or experienced, there is something that can be utilized in the classroom setting. I have even loaned it to my administration Recommend this to anyone who wishes to have a great resource at their fingertips!!!!! I am a high school teacher in Cerritos, California teaching in the Resource Class with extremely bright special ed students.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great tool for new and experienced teachers, June 8, 2008
I completely disagree with the negative reviews of this book. It is WAY worth the price! I'm a National Board Certified Teacher who has been teaching for 24 years and I still find good ideas to use from this easy-to-use reference tool. The organization is great and the bulleted lists very helpful. Also, it's an excellent gift for my student teachers, all of whom greatly appreciate it. I showed it to a colleague last week who has just accepted a job with a local college as a student teacher supervisor and he immediately asked if he could buy my book to give to his student teacher and where he could order another copy for himself!

5.0 out of 5 stars Must Read, June 8, 2008
I don't understand why this book has three negative reviews. Perhaps the formatting could be improved, but this book is an outstanding resource applicable to all teaching situations. I teach biology at a state university and I have found the sections on creating a supportive learning environment, building a learning community, and alternatives to lecturing particularly helpful. Many of the pedagogical suggestions work better for my smaller classes (under 30 students), but I have applied some of Dr. Partin's suggestions into my large lectures (200 students), such as guided imagery and cooperative learning.

There is a section called "In Search of Educational Excellence" that gives an overview of educational research. This section should be read and understood by every consumer of educational research. This includes K-12 teachers, administrators, parents who have a child in any school, and all voting citizens. Some research in education is garbage and Dr. Partin explains what rigorous empirical research should look like.

My research is in science education and what we know about learning is in concert with Dr. Partin's recommendations: provide a constructivist learning environment and encourage active learning. However, this book is not just a pedagogical guide, it offers suggestions for interacting with students, parents, colleagues, and administration.

New and veteran teachers will find specific activities to try and guidelines for writing and implementing lessons. This book is absolutely crammed full of resources.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Book with lots of neat ideas, June 25, 2003
By A Customer
I am a 2nd grade teacher. I have found that this books has given me lots of great ideas. When you are first starting out as a teacher you forget all those little things that you might need or others have suggested. This book puts it all together. I have sticky notes ALL over this book. I am very pleased with what is has said.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great reference, August 5, 2009
I am a beginning teacher and this book is wonderful. It is a little daunting at first with being 365 pages, but it is organized so well. There are brief introductions to each new topic and then a list of activities you can use, or phrases, or whatever the topic is covering. I think that the ideas are great for new teachers because it expands on everything I learned in my classes and observed in my teaching.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classroom Teacher's Survival Guide, July 28, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Classroom Teachers Survival Guide: Practical Strategies, Management Techniques, and Reproducibles for New and Experienced Teachers (J-B Ed: Survival Guides) (Paperback)
Excellent book. If you are a new teacher and can afford only one how-to-survive-teaching book, buy this one. Dr. Partin provides us with neatly organized sections on classroom management, successful lesson plans, homework strategies, effective parent-teacher interaction, creative use of classroom time and much more. Each section includes a helpful bibliography of additional information. He also includes a wonderful section on use of the Internet as a teaching resource. I love this book and have recommended it to my preservice friends. Thanks Dr. Partin! You know your stuff and share it generously.
