Editorial Reviews

According to Claude Debussy, Music begins where the words end. It builds a bridge between reality and unreality. In his Préludes , he left the music open to interpretation by the performer and the listener. For Danseuses de Delphes and Des pas sur la neige the composer wished that they be played only privately among four eyes , so to speak (entre quatre-z-yeux).

Daniel Barenboim is the performer on the present recording. In the first prelude, 'Danseuses de Delphes', Debussy sets dance movements to music, evoking three bacchantes sculpted on a column in the Louvre Museum. The third prelude, 'Le vent dans la plaine' describes the opening words of a poem by Paul Verlaine. Charles Baudelaire s 'Harmonie du soir' inspired the music of the fourth prelude, 'Les sons et les parfums tournent dans l air du soir'

'La fille aux cheveux de lin' derives from a poem by Leconte de Lisle, while.'La Cathédrale engloutie' tells the story of the sunken cathedral of Ys, which rises again from the waters, becomes visible and sinks once more a tone painting of cathedral-like chords.

Claude Debussy endeavored to revolutionize tone color. He wanted to journey down new roads remote from harmonic 'rules'. 'Music is mysterious mathematics whose elements partake in the eternal. It lives in the movement of water, in the play of the waves in the changing winds.'

This is now reissued as a Blu-ray on Euroarts and under the new title of Debussy preludes Book 1. The review for the new reissue is as follows;

...............................................................................

This disc is a re-issue of a disc previously titled ‘Entre quatre-z-yeaux’ which split opinion in terms of reviews being awarded 5 and 1 star grades. The original recording was made in 1999with the bonus concert items being recorded in 2000. The producer was Paul Smaczny who has made many fine recording for Euroarts before forming his own company ‘Accentus.’

The confusion over responses may well be the result of a misunderstanding concerning the real purpose of this disc and which is implied by the original title and, perhaps unfortunately, not kept for this reissue. Collectors may be tempted to purchase this disc as a performance of the Preludes book1 with some documentary elements or alternatively they may consider this as primarily a documentary about Debussy using the Preludes as illustrative material. This distinction will make a huge difference to the way the disc is appreciated.

There is no doubt that the prime purpose of the disc is to explore Debussy as a character and as a musician with the intention to try and explain his whole approach to conceiving composition. Each Prelude is played subsequent to some such observation and is intended to be the precise example of the point being made.

Essentially Barenboim is at pains to make the point that Debussy’s music is the art of illusion, one of seeing things at a distance and just out of immediate reach.
