5.0 out of 5 stars A Gem!, January 14, 2003
This review is from: Claude Thornhill & His Orchestra - 1947 (Audio CD)
No one until now to have a review placed here about this fine LP/ CD? Unbelievable!
I own the Lp for some years now and I'm happy that its available on CD too. Its truly a pure GEM this LP. Wonderful arrangements of sweet and swing music in its best manner. Mr. Thornhill was a fine Big Band Leader an a man of musical taste! Hear his beautiful own theme "Snowfall".. this will be something you'll never forget!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Thornhill with Gil Evans deleted!, September 28, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Claude Thornhill & His Orchestra - 1947 (Audio CD)
The tunes are great, but I can't recommend a CD where Gil Evans' fabulous intros and codas have been edited out. "Donna Lee," for example, begins with Thornhill's piano, missing an unbelievable piece of Gil's arranging work.

4.0 out of 5 stars "This beautiful man", March 14, 2007
This review is from: Claude Thornhill & His Orchestra - 1947 (Audio CD)
Review title is taken from a Duke Ellington quote. After Claude Thornhill's death, Ellington called Ruth Thornhill and among other things said, "I wonder if the world will ever know how much it had in this beautiful man." High praise from a musical equal.

CLAUDE THORNHILL & HIS ORCHESTRA 1947 (aka "The Uncollected") features different takes of Thornhill standards. An example would be the band's theme song, "Snowfall." Unlike the previous COLUMBIA 78 (that had "Where Or When" on the flip), this track is more subdued, with muted brass playing an octave lower than on the more familiar record. On this one, Thornhill lays down some nice runs on keys. He once said, "This is the version we used to close our shows."

This album is a nice mix of quiet ballads, swinging dance tunes, and some bop. Sound quality of this set is exceptionally fine-- there's no distortion or lathe on the source material and high frequencies haven't been dampered by filtering. Includes five pages of bio and song commentary. Highly recommended.

TOTAL RUNNING TIME -- 44:16
