5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet Memories
I bumped into Claudia in a cozy club in Amherst in 82 - when she played Drinking Buddy I thought my heart would break... ah, sweet memories! She was and is a favorite!

3.0 out of 5 stars Hints of things to come, spots of brilliance, uneven
Claudia Schmidt was looking for her place when she made this recording. You'll find a representative of several folk/blues styles, as if she was checking them off a list. "Drinking Buddy" started off the CD with close harmonies; "If I Only Had a Brain" was over before you knew it, and didn't make much impression. "Lady" tells its story well...

"Lady" tells its story well. My favorite on this album, and the reason I picked this one over the other Schmidt offerings (I have _Midwestern Heart_ on vinyl) was "Since I Fell For You", the Tommy Edwards hit. Schmidt switches back and forth between the Edwards torchy rendering and a more bluesy one; she gives the song a great ride, but her contralto voice would have been better used if she'd stayed with the torch. I can recommend this album as an intro to an artist more people should know; but in these days of format radio, artists like Claudia Schmidt have a hard time being heard to a wide public.
