Editorial Reviews

To celebrate Claudio Abbados 80th birthday (June 26, 2013), DG has prepared this comprehensive 41-CD box set devoted to his recordings of symphonic repertoire. Abbados career with Deutsche Grammophon stretches back over more than four decades. In that time he has made innumerable recordings that have stood the test of time. In opera, in modern music, as a partner in concerto recordings, Abbado has left a glorious indelible mark. In more recent years, every Abbado recording has been an event, something special whether his Mahler symphonies with Berlin, or the Mozart, Bach and Pergolesi projects with his Orchestra Mozart. And, of course, as a sponsor and champion of new orchestras he is unrivalled not least with his most recent creations, the Lucerne Festival Orchestra and the Orchestra Mozart.

The box set includes: Complete recordings of eight great composers Mozart (with Orchestra Mozart), Haydn, Beethoven (with Berliner Philharmoniker), Schubert, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Bruckner and Mahler (with Berliner Phliharmoniker and Lucerne festival Orchestra)

Featuring seven of the orchestras with whom Abbado is most closely associated: Orchestra Mozart, Chamber Orchestra of Europe, London Symphony, Berliner Philharmoniker, Wiener Philharmoniker, Mahler Chamber Orchestra and Lucerne Festival Orchestra

All recordings have been personally selected by Claudio Abbado

Bruckners First Symphony a special addition: at Abbados request this recording is being released here for the first time anywhere

Sound quality is great.

Moments of true excitement and intelligent interpretation were occasionally marred by a lack of distinctiveness in vision and even a certain banality in spots.

Needless to say, I highly recommend this box for all those who want or need this music even if you already have some of these recordings in single CD format.

Claudio Abbado seems to have had two careers. His early opera recordings have (mostly) stood the test of time with Verdi being the composer with whom he felt most comfortable. His DGG recordings of Macbeth and Simon Boccanegra are especially fine. Abbado's Rossini Il Barbiere di Siviglia, with a brilliant Hermann Prey as Figaro, joins recordings under Marriner and Gui as one of the finest ever made. Abbado's early symphonic recordings, on the other hand, have always struck me as somewhat uneven. Moments of true excitement and intelligent interpretation were occasionally marred by a lack of distinctiveness in vision and even a certain banality in spots. Abbado's Beethoven cycle made for DGG in the 1980s was serviceable - the Eroica I thought the best of the nine - but were hardly comparable to some of the finest cycles recorded over the years.

This has all changed over the past two decades. With Abbado battling a life-threatening illness, and advancing age yielding a greater profundity of vision, his symphonic output has undergone a metamorphosis of startling dimensions. Few would argue that Abbado's recent audio and video recordings of the Mahler symphonies are not amongst the finest ever made. Contained within this collection are Mahler's complete symphonies, all but No.2 performed live by the Berlin Philharmonic and dating mostly from recordings made over the past 15 years. The jewel of the cycle is the 2nd Symphony, which is an emotionally probing and intensely moving vision of death and resurrection, performed live by Abbado's signature Lucerne Festival Orchestra in a recording made in August 2003. This Symphony No.2 is searing in its intensity and will not fail to burn its way into your psyche.

I was heartbroken to hear of the death of Claudio Abbado. I have always considered him to be one of the all time greats in the conductor area. It so happens that I had just finished playing the box entitled "Claudio Abbado Symphony Edition". I believe it to be one of the best box sets I own and I own a lot of them. There are all wonderful performances of the Mahler, Bruckner, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Mendelssohn and Brahms symphonies on 41 CDs. The sound for the most part has been improved and on a good music system you can just about hear everything in the music. Needless to say, I highly recommend this box for all those who want or need this music even if you already have some of these recordings in single CD format.

Just started listening to this. Nice compact collection. Sound quality is great. I have other versions of most of these works, but am really impressed with the musicality of Abbado and the different orchestras here. There is a great natural flow to the pieces, great articulation and clarity of parts - from string sections to woodwinds to brass and percussion. Highly recommend. Abbado was able to find the beauty in these pieces.

As a conductor I have been a fan of Abbado for many years. He inspires me to work harder and know my scores better than ever. It is an exceptional joy that I experience when listening to these performances of his. Get it now and wallow in great music making.
