Great even without Derek Jacobi, January 7, 2012
I first read I Claudius and Claudius the God in this two-book format. I still have the set. I could be talked into letting it go for $227, if that's really the going price.
You don't need this box set edition, however, to enjoy this fascinating and educational piece of creative fiction. I am a great fan of Colleen McCullough. Her Masters of Rome trilogy, which became a five-book epic, is spectacular. So is this.
I read it at about the same time it was being presented on public television with Derek Jacobi in the title role. The book transfered well to the screen, but it also is a jewel to read. I was planning to reread it this winter, but perhaps I should put my boxed, two-volume set in the vault and buy a current edition.
If you like C. McCollough's work, I'm sure you would love this too. Great reading and a painless way to learn about this significant period of history.
