Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Breimer is a partner in a very successful Los Angeles entertainment law firm; nevertheless, his book is a straightforward, rather than promotional, account of the laws screenwriters should have some knowledge of in negotiating deals for their work. As Breimer advises, screenwriters should have a basic understanding of their rights, even though they will invariably engage a lawyer to negotiate those rights. Thus he begins with a concise, yet enlightening, explanation of the screenwriter's lowly position in Hollywood, goes on to an overview of contracts, and then, in detail and with examples drawn from contracts and from the law, proceeds with options and purchase agreements; writing assignments (work-for-hire situations); copyright, ideas, and titles; collaboration agreements; the role of the producer; and, finally, questions that writers may need to ask their agents or lawyers. Extremely useful for both fledgling and established writers and for certain other professionals in the motion picture business. Bonnie Smothers

5.0 out of 5 stars CLAUSE BY CLAUSE a must!, March 12, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Clause by Clause (Paperback)
I picked up this book the day I received my first Option/Purchase Agreement. I knew hardly anything about what my rights were and didn't have the money to hire an attorney. CLAUSE BY CLAUSE was easy to understand, direct, and thorough. I was then able to negotiate the agreement and received much better terms. It saved me potentially thousand of dollars. Breimer did a fantastic job.

5.0 out of 5 stars An indispensable reference for screenwriters., May 3, 1997
By
This review is from: Clause by Clause (Paperback)
When I heard, late in the summer of '95, that this was being published, I rushed over to my local bookstore and reserved a copy of the first delivery. This has been one of the few times that my anticipation about a book was entirely justified. Written by an entertainment lawyer, it provides a solid paradigm for how the "business" in "show business" works for writers. It gave me a way of thinking about what I do that I find to be very healthy. I now know how deals are usually structured under present realities, how those conditions have been shaped by the history of the business, how upcoming deals can be structured, and what to look for in a negotiation. I know what to give up as a lost cause, what to hold out for, and how to supervise my lawyer. When the crunch comes, I hope I'm able to fully utilize these valuable lessons
