Book Description

4 and upP and up
Many people can identify the name of St. Peter Claver from school, church or missals, but they are unfamiliar with this courageous and just man. This beautifully illustrated, bilingual book will introduce young children (and their parents) to his life and times.

Peter Claver was a Spanish Jesuit missionary who came to the New World in 1610. When he arrived in Cartagena he was shocked by the slave trade and dedicated himself for forty years to gaining freedom for the slaves while he cared for them, bringing them food and medicine and tending the sick. He caught the plague and died in 1654. Because of his tireless work, he is the patron saint of slaves, African-Americans and race relations.

Children will love this colorful story of St. Peter Claver. It is particularly noteworthy for its:

--appeal to African-Americans

--appeal to Hispanic people

--its bilingual format

Editorial Reviews

Review

Julia Durango has written a brief but very beautiful account of his life. -- Tulio Aristizabal, S.J.

Peter Claver, Patron Saint of Slaves is a story of both valor and adventure in the New World. -- Claudio M. Burgaleta, S.J., Ph.D.

This story should be one shared in our homes, in our Catholic schools, and among our religious educators. -- Dr. Hilbert Stanley

From the Inside Flap

In the seventeenth century, a young Jesuit traveled from Spain to Cartagena, Colombia, and there saw slavery for the first time. He was so shocked he immediately took a vow to be the "slave of slaves forever" and spent the rest of his life caring for them.

With simple, graceful language and beautifully expressive art, his story is told here in a way even young children can understand.

Praise for the book--

Pedro Claver was one of the first people in history to dedicate his life to the defense of human rights. Julia Durango has written a brief but very beautiful account of his life. -- Tulio Aristizabal, S.J., Director of the San Pedro Claver Sanctuary, Cartagena, Colombia

This little book for children will without a doubt be an excellent resource as we rekindle an interest among Catholics of African descent about those early Catholics who played important roles in living the gospel message. This story should be one shared in our homes, in our Catholic schools, and among our religious educators. -- Dr. Hilbert Stanley, Executive Director, National Black Catholic Congress

"Peter Claver, Patron Saint of Slaves" is a story of both valor and adventure in the New World.... Treat yourself and those you love to the story of the 'slave of slaves,' and be freed by the example of his love, valor, and compassion. -- Claudio M. Burgaleta, S.J., Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Theology, Fordham University

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect, March 25, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Peter Claver, Patron Saint of Slaves/Pedro Claver, Santo Patrono de los Esclavos (Paperback)
This is a terrific example of a spiritual book for kids. The poetic text rivals that of the secular classics, and the pictures are rich, textured, and deeply moving. Yet there's no overt message, no preaching, no denominational stand. It's just a wonderful book -- period.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, moving story for children of all ages, April 2, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Peter Claver, Patron Saint of Slaves/Pedro Claver, Santo Patrono de los Esclavos (Paperback)
This is a wonderful story of a man who made a difference in many slaves' lives. The side by side English/Spanish text is beautifully written, and stays nondenominational, even though it is the story of the patron saint of slaves. The illustrations are also lovely, and both the text and pictures hold the attention of my antsy son. One of his favorite books, it is a deeply moving spiritual story that I recommend to all.

I read Peter Claver, Patron Saint of Slaves, to my three grandchildren, and they were delighted with the tender story line but especially with the vivid and colorful illustrations by Garcia-Franco. I heartily recommend the book to others. It focuses on human compassion. It is a wonderful book for children and expresses the story in both English and Spanish. Anyone of any religious persuasion would find the book beneficial for teaching children kindness to others.
