Product Description

Something stalks the citizens of Arizona... Dr. Angie Rippard is an Arizona wildlife biologist who is drawn into a police investigation when two teenagers are found dead on a golf course that borders protected National Forest Land. Rippard suspects the teens were attacked by a large mountain lion. Backed into a corner, it knows no fear... Rippard believes that the resort was developed too close to wilderness lands, but her plan to relocate cougars in the area provokes the wrath of the resort's owner-Charlie Rutledge-who believes the animals should be exterminated. Eight million years have shaped its predatory skill... Deep inside the Tonto National Forest, Rippard and her grad students realize that Charlie Rutledge is hunting them. In a thrilling climax, Rippard must make a choice to kill the cougar that is certain to kill Charlie Rutledge, or kill Rutledge who is certain to kill her. Now we are the endangered species.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fast paced book that keeps you on edge., June 20, 2009
I was pleasantly surprised by the writing in Claws. It was a very fast paced and easy read. I could hardly put it down. Since I have lived in the areas that the book explores, I was deeply engrossed by the knowledge the author had of the areas. This book makes you well aware of why we should remember when in the wilds, we are the intruders.

Slightly disappointed with the ending, since it was a little off the mark. I will read this author again.

2.0 out of 5 stars Started out good, but got very unbelievable and weird, June 23, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I'll have to agree with Susan - the book was very promising in the beginning, very believable, but then turned the corner. It raised a flag when the "Chopper" drove his "hummer" through the blocked off area. Men do not fare well in this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jaws in the desert, August 25, 2009
By Richard Childers (San Francisco Bay) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Stacey Cochran has written a truly terrifying book. He sort of turns our "green" love of wildlife against us. We want to save this cougar at first but he clearly has other ideas. Stacey's use of locations is impeccable. I know because I grew up on a ranch in that very setting and he uses the desert mountains to perfection. I'm afraid his exaggerated villain is a bit over the top but Dr. Rippin is a solid character, well developed and quite likable. But the star of the book is the cougar. He is a force to be reckoned with and as the book progresses, he becomes absolutely terrifying. The last animal this scary was the shark in Jaws. This book is an enjoyable read and a real page turner. You won't find a better bargain for a buck.

I really enjoyed this book, with its unique angle on the rogue animal theme. The writing made me feel the tension of being stalked along with the prey.
