Cano Graham is among the foremost activists and authorities in the United States concerning the ancient art of Clay Therapy (Pelotherapy). The very soul of his book is the unimaginable healing spectrum, both internally and externally, of modern clay therapy. This healing phenomenon moves through dozens of inspiring human-interest tales, beginning in 1987 with Mr. Graham's odyssey of building the original Crystal Cross Therapeutic Clay Center in Tecopa Hot Springs, California. The reader is aware early on that this enigmatic author, who is on hiatus from a productive acting career, has an active interest in medical issues. But an ominous conflict surfaces when Cano is indicted and sent to Federal Prison for his involvement in a conspiracy to distribute drugs and launder money. Cano's journey continues with fascinating stories from Federal Prison when he smuggles the clay inside and covertly uses it to treat inmates with afflictions mainstream medicine does not handle well. The Clay Disciples, written during his eleven years behind the razor wire of Federal Prison, is his semi-autobiographical reflection and represents fifteen years of hands-on experience with clay. Cano Graham has been described as an eccentric activist because of his fervent lobbying to have the regal cause of clay therapy accepted universally as a centerpiece of 21st century alternative medicine. The reader will sense between the lines a whisper of love and respect for all humanity, made audible through this unusual book's inspiring affirmation of life. Clay is wonderful, but this book could be a lot better,

Clay is a very effective modality. It can be used externally to heal wounds, and taken internally to promote good digestion and remove toxins. The number of ways in which clay can be utilized is almost limitless; and we learn about quite a number of them from Graham's book. The anecdotes about the health problems of real, everyday people, and how they are solved using clay, are down-to-earth, believable and compelling. This makes the uses of clay believable and compelling as well.
Unfortunately, there is very little science in the book to explain how and why clay works. Science-wise, the most important paragraph on page 92 -- which states that negatively-charge clay works because it is drawn to toxins, chemicals, inflammation, torn tissue and other materials that have a negative charge -- is an ERROR. The paragraph should read that toxins etc. have a POSITIVE charge, which is why the negatively-charged clay corrects health imbalances. No wonder a reader might be confused! In the introduction, Graham states that he's not a writer. But if the disclaimer is intended to excuse the sloppy editing, typos and grammatical mistakes, it doesn't; it simply detracts from the book's message. Although some of the descriptions are lovely, too often the author gets bogged down in unnecessary details. For instance, entire pages are devoted to dialog for such mundane activities as people planning to meet for dinner, when a one-line "We met for dinner" would have sufficed. Other times, Graham is stingy with material that I would love to see expanded. For instance: Was the money laundering for which he was eventually jailed done to finance his clay retreat? Or were there other reasons as well? Did Graham ever regret not having told his mother the truth about his illegal activities? And, most important, what was the reason for his taking drugs in the first place? For someone who apparently wants to capitalize on his colorful life, this book lacks self-analysis and depth in the areas that really matter. Another, major detraction from the book is Graham's focus on himself and his accomplishments, presented in a way that sounds like incessant bragging. His obvious love and devotion to the clay is laudable. That tells its own story and does not need to be embellished by the author's attempts to make himself appear important. Finally, Graham's years in prison and how he used clay to help the inmates -- which is heavily publicized in the promotion of the book -- is barely expanded on. I felt ripped off in that regard; you'll have to read Graham's upcoming book to learn more about that aspect of his life. Overall, this book succeeds in whetting the reader's appetite to learn more about healing with clay. However, it fails in other important ways. I picked this book up at a friend's house and had no intention of reading the whole thing. Two days later I finished it. It's a very interesting read. From the introduction to "The Love Child", I found this one hard to put down. I hope Mr. Graham follows it up with an expanded version of his experiences in prison.
