2.0 out of 5 stars the best song was missing!
I absolutely loved Clay Pigeons - I've made anyone visiting watch it. That's how much I love it. But the cd disappointed me because it left out some songs most importantly "It's Now or Never" which was, in my opinion, played at a crucial point in the movie and at one of my favorite scenes. The scene was when Lester was in "Vixon's" kitchen getting a beer & he eyed the...

"It's Now or Never" is obviously the song that everyone associates with this movie, and it's just not there on the soundtrack.

However, what is there is pretty darn good. To one unfamiliar with the movie, it's a mishmash of rock, pop, and country mixed together, but to one who's watched the movie carefully, it all makes sense, From the raucous "Timebomb" to Jimmy Wakely's "Moon Over Montana" and all in between such as "Everybody's Talkin' Sara Evans "Almost New", Don Gibson's "Sea of Heartbreak", Sister Hazel's "Let Your Love Flow", even Pat Boone's "Moody River" and the title song.

As a matter of fact, those who think they don't like country, or don't like rock, or don't like older pop music, will find their musical tastes expanding as long as they listen to the music in relation to the movie itself. The way the music's used gives a whole new perspective so that you can see what each style of music is really about.

5.0 out of 5 stars great compilation, November 11, 1998
This review is from: Clay Pigeons (Audio CD)
great movie. great soundtrack. the remake of "let your love flow" will have even the most hardcore, anti-70's folks tapping away. . .the "real" (i.e., not "young") country songs take your breath away and they remind you of how classic country music can be. the first song "timebomb" is a gem. just a great CD to have in the car as you are be-bopping down th eroad.

I was a little disappointed by some of the missing songs, especially It's Now or Never from one of the best scenes in the movie. Proof that it is not easy to get the rights to sell an Elvis song. But, can you judge on what is missing? No-- judge this soundtrack by what is there. This CD sports 11 really great tracks which more than make up for the inclusion of "Almost New" by Sarah Evans.

If you have yet to see the movie, get up now and go get it. If you've already seen the movie, then you already know how good the soundtrack is.

I really enjoyed this soundtrack because of the varitey of songs, not to mention that 99% of them were just darn good! I didn't like the two country songs, but the others made up for them 100%!

4.0 out of 5 stars Collapsis tops the soundtrack with catchy tune., April 5, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Clay Pigeons (Audio CD)
This soundtrack is very good through and through. Collapsis' track, "Clay Pigeons (The Ballad of Lester Long)" takes the cake, though. I'd heard that they were gonna be on the soundtrack (they're from the area) so I figured I'd check it out. That song is great... quarky, but great. Mike Garrigan has been playing that kind of music around The Triangle (Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill) since 1993, and since forming Collapsis it's only gotten better. I'd highly recommend not only this soundtrack, but "The Chartreuse EP" they released in Oct. '98. I think their major-label debut will come out this Fall, too.

So, yes... Clay Pigeons is a good soundtrack especially topped off with a song by a great band... Collapsis. Check 'em out!!

The sound track is an audible image of the film, which by the way is one of the best "sleepers" ever made. Vince Vaughn is the most loveable sicko serial killer you could imagine. He refers to his victims as "just clay pigeons to me", which is the theme of the movies title sound track, "The legend of Lester Long". The sound track is excellent, but you have to have seen the film to appreciate it.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite soundtracks, ever., February 10, 2011

The soundtrack for this movie did a great job of supporting the very fine line between macabre and jocular tones that the director set for this movie. Nothing wrong with good old-fashioned, sociopathic fun!

The soundtrack to the movie was much like the movie itself - it ran in ever direction and still left footprints that made sense. It has a mixture of rock, country thrown in by the earful, and some pop stylization to give it a rounded approach. It doesn't sound like it would work, either, but just like the movie it takes an eclectic blend of herbs and spices and makes something beautiful. Albums have been trying to do that for years, most rather forced in the process, but this was an exception to the rule.

Some Verve Pipe, a little Tonic, a nice blend of Firewater, and even some Boone and Lovett; that just scratches the surface of what the album has to offer. I've liked the album for quite some time and didn't realize just how much until I looked at how long I've owned it.

Of every addition to the soundtrack, perhaps the most surprising was the theme of film, The Ballad of Lester Long. It was one of those things you had to watch the credits to catch, and it was one of those things that you had to watch the movie to truly appreciate. If you did watch the movie you'll understand what I mean, too, because behind the sounds of something hitting with a catchy "twang" was a morbid little synopsis of the film that really captured Long (Vince Vaugh) in detail. It covered all the peculiarities of Lester Long, with that country-western smile and his despise for females and his zest for the knife all rolled into one. It wasn't like most soundtrack songs, either: it didn't sound like someone had written it in a split second or like they had written it without seeing the movie.

It just fit and ft well enough that I bought the soundtrack for this song by itself and considered the rest a bonus.

This is a strong recommend, because you need the Ballad of Lester Long and you'll love the rest. I normally don't say that about soundtracks, either, because the range on them is normally too obscure to enjoy. This is different, however, and you will like yourself for doing so.

5.0 out of 5 stars More than Excellent, January 20, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Clay Pigeons (Audio CD)
I agree with both of the comments below. The film was my favorite of last year, and I love the soundtrack. It even turned me on to country Music. Timeless, Ballad Of Lester Long and Sea Of Heartbreak are my favorite tracks. Friends have even suggested that I have listened to it more than anyone else in the world. It is also nice to know that there is another fan in Brookline
