I'd been waiting for this book for a long time, reading about it on the web site, and anticipating it anxiously. I wasn't disappointed.
It's a tricky topic and I can see how it could easily have been mishandled. Make it too dirty and people are offended. Make it too clean and they're disappointed. I think Craig has achieve the perfect balance of showing the work of familiar cartoonists whom we know from the funny pages and the comic books, and giving us just a peek at what they draw for themselves in their private moments. Art schools are full of nude models in life drawing classes, so it should come as no surprise that most artists have drawn an unclad female at one time or another. The fun is in seeing drawings like this from the pen of well-known cartoonists who specialize in family-friendly material. It's a novelty that in no way detracts from their vast body of work but shows them as rather human. I also have to mention the beautiful production. You don't usually find such high-quality paper and printing in a book at this price point. The cover alone is impressive, gorgeously printed with embossing and spot varnish. A real art book kind of treatment, nicely designed and executed. I'm looking forward to the next volume!

This book is just what the title offers; a very nice collection of early 1900's era dirty cartoons from some of the worlds most famous cartoonists including surprises from creators like Charles Schulz (creator of Peanuts) and Jack Kirby (creator of the X-Men, Fantastic Four, Hulk, Thor, etc.). As a self-proclaimed pervert I thoroughly enjoyed the drawings in this book, my only complaint, and thus the 4 out of 5 stars, is that each cartoonist features only a page at most of their work. While this allows the book to collect a prolific number of creators, I would have liked to see a full strip or story; I guess I'm just a sucker for a plot.

Very mild compared to todays porn. Mostly female nudes done tastefully and very few males. I saw more naked people at Seattle's Fremont Parade than I saw in this book. It was a great book for learning about clean cartoonists.

My girlfriend is a comic book nerd like me, and she has a pretty extensive collection of comics, graphic novels, and art pieces. She's usually pretty easy to shop for, but I was stumped this past holiday season. As soon as I saw this book, I knew that I had her stocking stuffer present taken care of.
It's not that dirty... mainly "R" rated levels of content, a lot of innuendo, and a few more risque pieces. This lack of hardcore content may be a drawback for some, but they can find their filth elsewhere. This is a collection of sketches, fine art, and doodles done by the minds behind Batman, Superman, Wonderwoman, and even sunday morning strips like Family Circus's Bill Keane. It's a very unique gift for those that love comics. Bottom line: She loved it, and I'm glad I bought it. Check it out!

Lots of entertainment here. "Dirty" drawings is perhaps a misnomer--mostly it's pinup material. OTOH, Joe Shuster (Superman) turns out to have an unexpected taste for S&M. Eisner and Caniff turned out some great material, as well as Ditko and the other Silver Age luminaries from Marvel.

I really enjoy Craig Yoe's books (Comic ArfSecret Identity: The Fetish Art of Superman's Co-creator Joe ShusterWeird but True Toon Factoids), and this one is more of the same, a high quality observation of a neglected aspect of the comic world. One thing it would have been great to have unearthed are some scandalous Richie Rich artwork by Ernie Colon and Lennie Herman. As it is, there's some great stuff in here and more surprising is who it is sometimes by.

This book shows the sexy and racy side of many popular cartoonists. It has a nice selection of recent artists along with classic comic book artists. The bios are very detailed and give the reader an excellent background for each artist.

Not worth buying,
By Bryce David (Cyberspace) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Clean Cartoonists' Dirty Drawings (Paperback)
"Clean Cartoonists' Dirty Drawings" by Craig Yoe hardly lives up to its title: it's a collection of so called raunchy drawings from 69 famous (or not so famous) cartoonists spread thinly within its 160 pages. This means that most of the page layout goes like this: one small bio of artist on one page and with accompanying drawing on another page. There's often only one drawing. Most of the original drawings weren't even big enough to fill in half of a page but here they are often blown up to gargantuan proportions on a single page. Just look at Charles Schulz pages, which are on page 36 (bio only) and one drawing blown up on page 37. It would be possible to fit all the information and the drawings on 75 pages, not 160 pages. In other words, the book is mostly padding. And the "dirty" drawings, albeit from a different era, are nearly all about bombshells drawn by geeky cartoonists. The subject quickly becomes tepid, hardly raunchy and nothing like the book cover promises. A sheep in wolves clothing. The best raunchy drawings are from Joe Shuster but you're better off buying "Secret Identity: The Fetish Art of Superman's Co-creator Joe Shuster" also by Yoe. Though also spread a bit too thinly, that book is true find and worth every penny. Not this one.

Not So Dirty,
By Ken A. "Little Kenny" (Torrance, CA) - See all my reviews

Only one of the artists had anything even approaching dirty. If you can really consider sex dirty. Other than that they were just fun nude and semi nude drawings and cartoons. Overall a very fun book and alternate look at some mainstream and not so mainstream artists.
