5.0 out of 5 stars Impressed, January 20, 2007
I am the victim of many permanent hair removal scams and I am also a recipient of professionally applied laser, and diathermy hair removal so I consider myself a bit of a veteran. Of all the DIY permanent hair removal systems I believe this one is the only one that I would ever recommend. The similarities of this method are very similar to diathermy (which is the only permanent hair removal method with FDA approval). The sensation is very similar, not quite as intense, the trade off is that it lasts longer. The little sores that are left after the treatment are exactly the same and take the same time to heal. The exact same tweezing technique is used, and the hair regrowth rate appears to be about the same as well. Unfortunately there is a chance of scarring if you aren't careful so read the instructions carefully and stick to them. It can be very tedious. My recommendation would be to get the area done professionally by diathermy and then use this to maintain it. The tweezers, whilst looking very professional are a bit hard to operate so spend a bit of money on a good set that are easier to use. My final advice; invest in some tea-tree oil antiseptic cream. It makes an amazing difference to the healing time and is very soothing as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Solution For Me -- But Is It For You?, June 3, 2009
I read about this product as much as I could before I went out to purchase it. In the end figured that if I ended up wasting [...] bucks it would be worth the experiment.

To my delight, I love this little home electrolysis! Yes, it hurts a little... but I think it depends on the area, the setting and how thick the hair is. So if you can endure a little pain for 15 seconds this might be for you. The salt water is a little bothersome, but once you get in the routine of using it, you don't think about it.

I haven't had a problem with bending the stylus tip yet, but it wouldn't hurt to have extra on hand (though they do give you a spare in the kit).

You will need to purchase some isopropyl alcohol if you don't already have some. You might also want to consider getting a magnifying mirror; however, it's not required and I have yet to use mine. I would also recommend using your own tweezers... the one they give you in the kit is too big and clumsy for me.

Things you should probably consider though are:

Are you really willing/able to spend time doing this?
It is tedious and time consuming.

Is this really for you?
Sure, it's great to have the convenience of doing this in your own home, but if it's only the novelty of having this at home electrolysis, think twice.

Do you have the patience to learn the technique?
It takes a few tries to figure out what works for you; learning to put the stylus tip in the right place and knowing when you've done it properly. I have found that when done right, it's only takes a gentle pull to remove the hair (meaning: it doesn't hurt, and there is minimal resistance from the hair follicle), instead of a typical quick yank when plucking.

Best of luck!

I sold this item within a month of purchasing it. Here I am many many months later, returning to say that the area that I treated has about 50% less hair growth than before and I'm actually considering purchasing this again to finish up treatment. It's a tough call. This machine has alot of cons, scabbing being the biggest issue for me, but this is one of the only machines that seems to deliver permanent results at such an affordable price. I just can't afford laser treatments and extra body hair makes me miserable. I think by writing this review I came to decision. It's worth it, but only by a hair. ;]

5.0 out of 5 stars Patience, July 3, 2007

I got what I paid for. The process as I expected is painful and tedious, but it works. There is no hair in the places I used it and no scar left at all. It is a risk you have to take. Some people are more likely to scar than others.

The needle is very easy to bend so be careful, and make sure to start at the lowest setting and work your way up. I used about a two because three left a mark that took several weeks to heal. The beeping sound the machine makes is annoying but necessary for you to know that an electrical charge is being delivered.

5.0 out of 5 stars It Works, December 19, 2009
This review is from: Clean + Easy Deluxe Home Electrolysis (Health and Beauty)
Although I didn't buy it on Amazon, I have had this home electrolysis kit for several years now. I have only used it on my bikini area. The first time I attempted the procedure, it was very painful, so I reduced the frequency to one of the lower settings. As I got used to the pain, I was able to gradually increase the setting. It took about 3 - 4 separate times to completely rid myself of unwanted hair, but I was determined. I read positive reviews elsewhere, and they seemed genuine. They warned that it takes several sessions to succeed, so I was patient, and allowed the area to heal completely each time. I made sure that everything was sterilized with rubbing alcohol beforehand including the skin area, and cleaned afterwords as well. I used Neosporin + pain to help reduce the swelling, pain, and scabbing.

If you cannot afford professional electrolysis, and would rather do it yourself in the privacy of your own home without any fears of other people's germs, I highly recommend this product.

4.0 out of 5 stars Frusting but Promising Endings, November 6, 2010

I ordered this for my fiance to remove some patches of hair on his back. I had to read the instruction booklet a couple times to fully understand how I was suppose to get the the stylus tip into the hair follicle. I'm sure once you have been able to manage the technique of hitting the hair follicle the right way it should be easy. Some hairs (individual hairs one at a time) took about 20 minutes for the beeping to go off to let me know I was doing it right. (When you have placed the stylus tip correctly into the hair shaft the machine will start beeping to let you know it is properly sending currents at the time. I have yet to decide if the beeping lasts as long as it should be left in there. It's a good couple of seconds.) Other times I was able to get 5-6 hairs without any trouble.

I do believe this system works, after removing the hairs a small mosquito like bump formed (this is normal). If you have the patience to remove hair one at a time and give yourself enough time to master the technique you will receive results. It will just take A LOT of patience.

I also recommend investing in another set of stylus tips. Being new to this, I was not familiar with the technique and bent the stylus tip a bit, they are VERY fragile. It still works but is more difficult to maneuver.

***I would like to update and add that weeks later my fiance has had NO regrowth of the hair that had been removed in that tiny patch. He has a patch of hair on one of his shoulder blades with a small bald spot in the middle of it all. HIGHLY impressed***

I am a redhead with sensitive skin and very thick facial hairs, on certain areas of my face I get irritation/shaving bumps very easily so I decided to permanently remove the hairs in those areas with electrolysis. Were I not a redhead, I probably would have just done laser hair removal since it is much cheaper and faster than professional electrolysis (laser does not work on red hair due to different type of pigment than other hair colors).

I would not recommend using this machine to remove thinner hairs where the follicles are hard to see, ie arm or leg hairs. It is better suited for thicker hairs such as pubic areas or male facial hair, women might find it useful for the eyebrows also.

In order to successfully use this device you will need a good lighted magnifying mirror, I would recommend a 7x mirror as it gives good magnification and allows you to see clearly and in focus without getting too close to the mirror. On 10x/15x mirrors you have to get so close that you may end up bumping the electrode and/or your tweezers against the mirror. I would also highly recommend a good pair of needle/point tip tweezers such as tweezerman or sally hansen ones, these make it much easier to pinpoint and grab a single hair compared with the tweezers included in this set.

Once you have those two items all you need is to follow the directions and practice. When I first started using the machine it took me about an hour to remove 15 hairs and about 10 of them failed (you can tell if it works because the hair will just slide out of the follicle with no resistance). After practicing for a while, I can now remove about 90-100 hairs per hour and very rarely have a failure. To some extent how fast you can go will depend on what area you are using it as well as how sensitive your skin is or how robust your hair follicles are. If you crank up the voltage you can zap them faster but it will hurt more and the chances of scarring are much higher, so it is best to stick with as low a voltage as possible.

**As it says in the manual DO NOT stretch the skin while the electrode is on, this will make it much more susceptible to scarring/pitting. It is however ok to stretch the skin to insert the electrode while it is not active, then complete the circuit after releasing the skin, in many areas this will make it much easier to insert the electrode correctly into the follicle at the right angle.**

This machine is not easy to use, it takes a steady hand and a lot of practice; however, for $70-80 (cost of this unit + a good lighted mirror and tweezers) plus around 60 hours of my time, I was able to remove a large section of my facial hair which was estimated to cost $5000 or more by a professional electrolysis technician. Also I was able to do it in a faster amount of time than professional electrolysis and on my own schedule. (The total hours of electrolysis would have been less using a professional, probably 35-40 hours; however, healing from professional electrolysis takes longer because their machines almost always use blend method which is faster but harsher, so they force you to spread the treatments far apart which makes the overall process take a long time)

1.0 out of 5 stars horrible product, May 14, 2007

this tool is very complicated and hurts like hell.
you need to mix a salt solution, get ethanol to clean everything, make sure the needle doesnt bend or stick out wronlgy, see inside the hairshaft which really ONLY works with hair as thick as eyebrows, hold on to different things at the same time but not at others (curve your hand, just not comfortable at all) and then you stick it into the hair and wait 15 seconds (per hair!) and it starts with a really loud and scary beep (which they dont tell you in the instructions so you freak out because it sounds like a fire alarm) and it HURTS! yes, all the 15 seconds you hold it in. and then puss comes out of your skin, also a fact they fail to mention in their how to use section. i tried 3 hairs, 2 gave me a scar for several weeks. no good at all!
so it is neither clean, nor easy, nor one touch nor deluxe.

5.0 out of 5 stars So far I am very happy, August 6, 2009

I got this product only last evening and I used it on my leg almost as soon as I got it. I personally liked the product so far. I cant say if the hair I treated are gone forever, I need to wait and see for that. The process is definitely tedious (since it treats one hair at a time), no doubt about it. If you are not patient and determined to do this - home electrolysis is not for you.

My 2 cents on this product:

1) Please read the manual very carefully before you start the process.
2) Keep a few things handy: like isopropyl alcohol, tweezers, magnifying glass. Make sure there is really good lighting on the area being treated.
3) I read some reviews online which said that using a numbing agent will help. I went to every store I could to find the cream everyone suggested "EMLA". But some said it is prescription only, some said they don't have it. In the end I got the antiseptic pain killer spray that is used normally when you get hurt, and that worked pretty well for me. It did hurt a bit one or two times, but over all I was ok.
4) The tip is kind of sensitive and easy to bend.
5) After the area is treated, my skin got red with little bumps - putting ice pack on the area did help me reducing the side effect.
6) In some other reviews I read online, people said this product has not been improvised in years. My opinion on that is that all this product does is that when the circuit is complete, it will pass the current. And this product does that pretty well - so there is no room for improving on that.
7) And yeah, the tweezers that came with this product was not useful, very difficult to use. I used my own tweezers.

I am going to use this product for a month and see how it goes :)

2.0 out of 5 stars Not Worth It IMO, October 23, 2007

(VINE VOICE)
I bought this product about fifteen years ago and was very disappointed in it. From the other reviews and the product pic, it looks like they haven't made any improvements to it either. It sounds and looks exactly the same as it did in the early '90's. This machine is definitely not clean or easy, either. For one you have to fill a cup with this salt water mixture, dip your fingers in it and hold the metal part of the stylus with your hands. Then you have to locate the hair shaft and put the stylus needle in it. When you locate the hair shaft, the machine makes a loud beeping noise. You have to do each individual hair like this. It stings a little bit, but I didn't find it painful, and I had it on the highest setting. There's a lot of pus and redness and this takes a long time to heal. I have some permanent scarring because of this too. (Making it LESS likely I would wear a bathing suit, instead of MORE like it was supposed to do.) And the real bummer was about 75 percent of the hairs came back. I usually had to repeat the treatments about six or seven times before the hair stopped growing. The stylus and the machine itself are very delicate (you'll probably be replacing it about once a year if you use it often). Depending where you want to remove the hair, it can be a real hassle to use. And if you need to remove a lot of hair, forget it. Using this thing, it will take you forever, guaranteed.

I used this thing every day for about two years straight and maybe removed about one square inch of bikini area hair, most of which I had to treat repeatedly becuase the hairs just kept returning. I finally gave up when the person in the apartment next to mine actually called the fire department because they thought the beeping sound was my carbon monoxide detector going off! That was a joy explaining to the fire department in my bath robe and slippers that the beeping was from my electrolysis machine. So much for keeping the whole matter private!

The only thing it's really good for is if you have a few thick hairs in an easy to reach area, like your face or chin. I treated a few hairs in this general area and it seemed to work fine, though you'll have to do the same hairs over multiple times, like I said before. If you have a large area you need to treat, don't even bother with this at all. It's a total waste of time. Just save up the money and get laser treatments.
