5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Guide for Homes un and under cleaned!
Being a former housekeeper for an apartment complex, I was quite amused that these two ladies would be kicking up the dust on this topic. LifetimeTV is obviously trying to have its version of the 'Two Fat Ladies' and/or Brit 'Fab Five' to call their own. You would think with the plethora of Merry Maids types out there that most homes wouldn't need folks actually tending...

3.0 out of 5 stars My house is cleaner after purchasing this book
Sometimes it doesn't necessarily take step-by-step directions to get something done...inspiration has a lot to do with it. While this book is filled with more pictures (of the hosts and microscopic pictures of filth) than I would have assumed, it inspired me to pick up a cleaning rag and get my house sparkling. I found quite a few tips and tricks, but many were learned...

Being a former housekeeper for an apartment complex, I was quite amused that these two ladies would be kicking up the dust on this topic. LifetimeTV is obviously trying to have its version of the 'Two Fat Ladies' and/or Brit 'Fab Five' to call their own. You would think with the plethora of Merry Maids types out there that most homes wouldn't need folks actually tending to the dirt and grime they create in their homes.

How wrong!

Most of us can't afford the likes of professional cleaners weekly and/or don't want complete strangers in our homes while we are not there. This book is certainly worth its money if you can muster yourself from the chaise lounge and bon-bons or rally up some extra strength after a full day of work or family.
The only real problem some folks might quibble on are the British terms the ladies sometimes use through their book. I am not completely familiar with their 'washing soda' term. I'm not sure if they are referring to Borax or exactly what the substance might be. Perhaps an American proofreader might have been a good investment [Ok, call me an ignorant American- SIGH!]
It has great tips and daily, weekly, monthly and seasonal schedules for the completely clueless.

Though I originally picked this up from the Public Library in my town, I'm thinking strongly of my own copy if just for the tips that I hadn't thought of until I picked up this book.

Better to spend the money here and do-it-yourself than plunking it into the professional cleaning companies. My opinion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Help is on the way, October 17, 2004
Is your house dirty? No, not just messy is it so dirty that your friends and most of your family have stopped visiting? Are there newspapers from last year turning yellow in the kitchen? Is there a nasty smell in your kitchen? Would the Center for Disease Control consider your toilet a health hazzard? How Clean is Your House is just the book for you. Tough Brits, Kim and Aggie are very, very firm with what they call filth offenders and offer simple (But not easy. If your house is really dirty they warn that you'll will be working hard to fix it up)solutions to the mess.

The authors are big on sanitation. They dont' care if your house is pretty they're talking about preventing illnesses brought on by human skin flakes, bedbugs, dust mites dust in general and bacteria. I prefer Home Comforts because it's an encyclopedia of the science of homekeeping but How Clean is Your House is an excellent guide for the novice cleaner or anyone who's house has gotten out of hand.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this book!, April 1, 2007
This review is from: How Clean Is Your House? Hundreds of Handy Tips to Make Your Home Sparkle (Mass Market Paperback)
I enjoy the television show, so I ordered the book. I'm always looking for new ways to keep my house tidy....and I'm allergic to a lot of the chemicals in housecleaning products. This book provides common sense alternatives to strong chemical cleansers -- my sinks now gleam, my stove is shiny and my floors are awesome!

This book isn't just for those whose homes look like a train wreck. It's also for those who have the little spots within their clean homes that still drive them crazy! For me, it was the bathroom, and my kitchen sink. With the tips in this book, I was able to solve those two problem areas without using strong chemicals. Baking soda, vinegar and lemon juice....and a couple dishwashing tablets down the loo.

Brilliant!!! :) Two thumbs up from me!

I found quite a few tips and tricks, but many were learned from watching the show. The layout looks similar those of popular magazines, as each section deals with a different area of the house (bathrooms, living rooms, windows, carpets, etc...) If you've been cleaning your home for a few years, then this book may not be all that helpful. I would highly recommend this to someone starting out....possibly a bridal shower or wedding gift for either the new bride OR groom.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great fun and totally useful too!, February 18, 2005
I had to have this book because every Monday night at 10:00 I'm glued to Lifetime. This show is so much fun and I think I have a plutonic crush on Kim and Aggie. I've always been accused of being a little obsessive about cleaning - and since How Clean is Your House? it's only gotten worse! So of course I had to get this book. It has so many useful tips in it. I have a whole day planned for the weekend for using some of their techniques for cleaning my apartment. I can't wait!

But the book. It's great for a laugh and for getting the gritty grime clean up off your stuff!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing, February 19, 2008

I guess I was one of the few who found this book extraordinarily disappointing. I had expected a book that gave tips on how to clean, which to some extent it did, but nothing that was like their show. I had wanted some of their recipes for natural cleaners and none of those were given. Instead the book consisted of list up on list of directions on how to tackle various rooms in the house. If that is what you are looking for, then this is the book for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for the cleaning tips!, December 5, 2004

I watched their TV show and had to have the book as they have a lot of cleaning tips using things you already have around the house like vinegar, baking soda, etc. Some of their terms are hard to understand though. The book is very entertaining and you can't help but to pick up some advice from it.

5.0 out of 5 stars gotta love these two ladies!, February 20, 2007

This review is from: How Clean Is Your House? Hundreds of Handy Tips to Make Your Home Sparkle (Mass Market Paperback)
I hate to clean. I mean, I love a clean HOUSE, but never much cared for the process. Well, now thats in the past! These two wonderful, whimsical ( yet tough!) British ladies have actually made it fun! They are witty, thorough, and not afraid to get their hands dirty. It was vindicating to me to see how spotless my apartment ( or FLAT, were I living in London!) is compared to some of the filth traps they visited and photographed. I find their accents charming..and I love how they can scold the homeowner while still being these sweet, dignified ladies! The book was a fun read, and the show is even more fun to watch!

5.0 out of 5 stars Just makes you want to get up and clean something!, October 1, 2007

Kim Woodburn and Aggie MacKenzie tackle some of the messiest houses on two continents, and they do it with humor and style. Just because you're elbow deep in muck is no reason not to look elegant! (I especially like their glamorously trimmed rubber gloves.)

This terrific companion book to the TV series, "How Clean Is Your House," isn't a comprehensive guide on how to clean anything and everything. It's just a fun little book with hundreds of tips from Kim and Aggie. It's hard to keep reading though - you keep wanting to get up and dust something!

The chapter called "Getting Started" includes both ladies' preferences for putting together an essential cleaning kit. Kim and Aggie prefer simple, easily available things like white vinegar, salt, baking soda, lemons, laundry soap - even denture cleaning tablets. It's amazing how common items and a little elbow grease work miracles if you know when and where to use them.

Other chapters offer advice on Kitchens, Living Rooms, Bathrooms, Bedrooms, Pets and Allergies.

These ladies really know how to motivate people and make cleaning fun!
