Above average "how-to" book for men AND women,
By jen a. (Portland, OR) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Clean Like a Man: Housekeeping for Men (and the Women Who Love Them) (Paperback)
I've read a number of books about cleaning and organization-- this one is by far the best. It's clear, well-written, and cuts right to the chase. I have trouble with organization and prioritizing, so the step-by-step guidelines on how to approach cleaning and organizational tasks are terrific-- this may seem simple to some people but for many of us it's a BIG problem. I'm very impressed with this book-- it's great for men AND women. I highly recommend it for anyone new to cleaning for him or herself or for those of us who are "experienced" but continue to struggle. Thumbs up!

I received this book as a gift. At first a thought it was a gag and although it is a fun read there are a lot of very solid tips and advice that should ring true for guys, from buying the right vacuum to being a housekeeping commando and whipping through a room in 15 minutes -- cleaning it completely with no sacrifice in the quality of your results. I've adopted many of the book's easiest, most effective "Strategic MANeuvers" and worked them into my daily routine so that my townhouse always looks great, or is at least always within 10 minutes of looking great. What more can a guy ask -- especially a guy who entertains the occasional woman in his home? Highly recommended, dude!

This is one of those perfect little volumes that should have been written long ago. I only wish my brother had one of these when he was single -- the image of his crusty bath towels haunts me to this day!Specifically geared towards housekeeping for the single guy, this book covers all bases, from laundry to grout. It's a quick, easy read, filled with useful advice about getting down to business and cleaning the mess up once and for all. I know I'll refer to it often. The author should be commended for keeping the tone funny and to the point, without turning it into a useless fluff piece or a comedy routine. The instructions are all really useful. Think of it as an instruction manual for bachelor living.

Not Gender-Specific--Gals Need Help Too!!!,

I read about this book in Bark magazine and knew I immediately had to get a copy. With the help of the friendly people at Amazon.com, these precious pages arrived within days and I whizzed from chapter to chapter, taking notes and preparing myself for my own K2 Syndrome. The funniest part of the story is that I am a chick (chill bra-burners). Growing up, my mother kept our house like a museum so when I moved out I lived like a frat boy until my thirties. Unfortunately for me, I got married last year and have had little/no success "keeping house." This bible isn't only for men, but for women who were either never "properly" taught, had housekeepers or just don't give a crap about all the junk tossed around. With open arms smelling of Windex, I thank the author and I am sure my husband, an extreme cleaner, will thank you when he notices there is indeed a carpet under the Sunday paper (dated March 2003), empty DVD and take-out boxes, my thesis (finished in 2002) pages the dog chewed in a fit of rage, and various Oprah-esque magazines leftover from last Christmas that were never read, but still bought in abundance. Peace, Love and Pledge, Onawa Fitzpatrick, Ph.D.

I heard the author Tom McNulty on a radio interview say that half of all couples who live together fight about cleaning. After listening to some of his cleaning tips for men, I bought the book for my husband, who is a little rough around the edges in the housecleaning department. We don't fight, but there's tension over the toilet seat, know what I meaan? The little things add up as I bite my tongue and grate my teeth. As my husband was paging through the book, I heard an occassional chuckle from him, a good sign. And the other day, he actually got out the vacuum cleaner and grabbed a bottle of Windex and some rags just to see ( he said) if some of the book's tips worked in real life. This is unprecedented. I hereby nominate Tom McNulty for the Nobel Peace Prize Relationship Version.

Making cleaning MANageable,
By Ken McKey (Milwaukee, WI) - See all my reviews

I enjoyed the tongue in cheek manner used to prod me into becoming a domestic dude. The words amusing and practical both describe the book. I liked the advice about brand name cleaning products and tools. Now if I can only get my wife to read it and follow the advice, we'll be getting somewhere.

CLAM for Single Women & the Dogs They Rescue,

This review is from: Clean Like a Man: Housekeeping for Men (and the Women Who Love Them) (Paperback)
Tom McNulty's Clean Like a Man is full of ideas and tips, and packed with humor. Although I wasn't sure it applied to me, I set about cleaning my house with his advice. My four 60 pound rescued dogs followed my every step. Two pieces of McNulty's advice really stood out: the first was "to clean from right to left." So I started in one corner and did just that...room by room...down the stairs, I wiped off all the mud my dogs had streaked on about 2 feet up from the floor. I carried my cleaning supplies with me. (I didn't listen to The Stones, but I did put on my favorite alternative musician from Chicago, Robbie Fulks). The dogs nearly knocked me off the landing a couple times; we kept going. The second piece of advice I noticed was a real shocker: "If you can see it, you are responsible for it." Mr. McNulty, are you sure? Does that mean if I CAN'T see it I am NOT resposible for it? Hooray! What a freeing thought for a girl! I TRIED to believe you; but I STILL vacuumed under and behind the beds. In all, I think -as a woman- I still cleaned too much. I had to listen to Robbie 4 or 5 times...but the house looked great. My ex-husband stopped by later that evening: "Wow", he says, "your house is really looking good." "Thanks," I replied. "I have been CLEANING LIKE A MAN!" Thanks, Tom McNulty. Great book!

I like this book because it is funny, to the point, and a nice motivator for those whose housekeeping is, er, indifferent. At used for a penny, it's money well spent before you finally decide to throw in the towel and pay big bucks for a cleaning crew. Some of the references are dated but sub in "iPod" for "Walkman" and you're there.

I recently purchased this book at a Home & Garden show where Tom was signing his book for people. What a nice man & very helpful! I bought this book for my husband hoping it would inspire him to help out with the housework a little more. It has and I have Tom to thank for it. This is a great book and I recommend it to everyone to read and if you ever get the chance to meet Tom, please do. He is a WONDERFUL PERSON!
