Derac holds dear. Now he has to focus on his own life and his team instead of
saving the citizens of Kinir.

Treason is only the
beginning...

Fueled by rage, the team chases the source to their
Commander's betrayal - a powerful wizard bent on revenge. The wizard seeks to
destroy the Kinir Elite, in both mind and body. No place is safe, even among
their allies.

The past holds the
key...

Derac's tragic past may be the key to saving the team. But
can he face the gruesome nightmare in time?

A fun new take on a classic genre: high fantasy. By this, I mean the tradition of J.R.R and Dragonlance, but with an added dash of military thriller. -- Rebecca Demerest

The author makes the characters three-dimensional, with strengths, weaknesses, and quirks of personality. -- Neil Benson

I love the world Ms Pergakis creates and can't wait to read more of it. -- Linda S. Andrews

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun with Elves November 6, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Cleanse Fire, the first book of the Kinir Elite chronicles by Anastasia V. Pergakis, is a fun new take on a classic genre: high fantasy. By this, I mean the tradition of J.R.R and Dragonlance, but with an added dash of military thriller. In Cleanse Fire, the Elves we are introduced to are part of an elite fighting squadron known as the Kinir Elite; they may look like gorgeous elves, but they fight like Marines.

But enough set-up, here's the meat. The plot is engaging, and calls to mind some of the military thrillers of Dan Brown (no, not Angels and Demons, but the Scarecrow series, much better stuff) as well as the fantasy styling of Dragonlance. The characters themselves have complex backgrounds and are not the simple one dimensional critters you sometimes find in fantasy novels that rely solely on their mythical race to provide depth. These characters are full-fledged characters.

The only negatives come in the mechanics of the writing, and those I think can be chalked up entirely to the fact that this is the first of what is sure to be a fun series. The plot and characters are enough to carry you over the rough spots, that's for sure; and, as the stories continue, I know the writing is going to mature wonderfully.

Though one of the best aspects of the whole thing? Part of the cover price goes to charity. That's right, a portion of each sale goes to the Wounded Warrior Project, a charity dedicated to supporting wounded veterans. That in itself is totally worth the $4.99 Kindle price, where it is available now. Hardcopy books are available starting on December 21st.

5.0 out of 5 stars action, honor, love November 10, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Burying himself in duty, Captain Derac Vidor tries to forget the death of his beloved wife. Every time his elite team of warrior elves rescues someone and burns the captures' building, however, he relives the gruesome memory. The only thing that can drive it away is diving into his next mission and the love for his country.

He soon finds he doesn't know who to trust as evidence points to a conspiracy aimed at the Kinir Elite with his commander at the head. But, it only starts there. Revenge is involved?

As they fight to uncover the truth, Derac also finds his heart opening to the very skilled archer on his team, Kie. Love within the team is taboo--at least for Derac, sighting his wife had been a member and he couldn't save her. But, will Kie change all that?

Surprise is around the corner in this book that offers elves, fairies, dragons, wizards, and a troll guarded underground prison. Cleanse Fire is an action packed adventure with a touch of romance--something I really enjoy. You're sure to fall in love with this team's story just as I have.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cleanse Fire - well-written first novel of a new series January 31, 2012
Format:Paperback
Cleanse Fire, by Anastasia Pergakis, is a well-written, action-packed fantasy novel, which grabs the reader on the first page and doesn't let go until the end. We are immediately introduced to the protagonist, Captain Derac Vidor, a captain of an elite group of warrior elves. Derac's unit fights against their enemies, humans and dwarves, and must contend with treachery from their superior officers. Derek's life is complicated by his inability to move on from the horrific manner in which his wife died ten years earlier. The author skillfully portrays his painful letting go of the past, and the relationship that develops between him and Kie, one of the warriors in his unit.

The skilled fighting ability of the elves resembles our own Special Forces soldiers. They kill with dispatch and have little remorse for the deaths of their enemies. This novel is not for the faint of heart. The author makes the characters three-dimensional, with strengths, weaknesses, and quirks of personality. At times, I thought there was a little too much fussing about clothes and hair by the warriors when their lives were constantly imperiled. A small issue, which does not detract from the novel.

Anastasia's crisp and clean writing provides necessary details of the actions and events, as well as the thoughts and feelings of her characters, without resorting to the excessive use of adjectives. This style facilitates the fast pace and doesn't force the reader to reread previous pages to figure out what is happening.

The wizard Takurix plays a pivotal part in the novel, even though "his hour on the stage" was not long. The author's use of a spell to enable the wizard to go back in time and see what really happened when his wife was killed, as opposed to what he thought he saw, was well done.
My main problem with the novel was the lack of a background, or explanation, of how the current state of affairs came to be. The reader doesn't know why the elves fight humans and dwarves, or why the fairies are their allies. This is critical because we are introduced to a war that began at least ten years earlier. At the start of the novel, I wondered if I was reading a second in a series of novels, rather than the first. I think the author has an opportunity to address this issue in the next novel, which I look forward to reading. The novel wraps up enough details to reach a satisfactory conclusion. It leaves many questions unanswered, leading the reader to the next novel in the series.
