Book Description

April 1, 1999 0472083732 978-0472083732
Books in the Clear Grammar series teach basic grammatical concepts, provide speaking and writing practice in grammatical structures and at varying cognitive levels, offer opportunities for students to check their progress, and serve as a grammar reference that is written with language and terms that lower- level students can understand without teacher assistance.

Lessons focus on one specific grammar point and include grammar presentations, lists of potential errors with corrections shown, written exercises, speaking activities, multiple choice exercises, and review tests.

Book 1 (beginning/high-beginning): the verb to be, regular verbs, possessive adjectives, demonstrative adjectives, past tense of to be and regular verbs, wh-questions, word order, present progressive, count and noncount nouns, prepositions.

Book 2 (high-beginning/low-intermediate): articles, to be + going to, past tense of irregular verbs, how questions, frequency adverbs, object pronouns, one/other, the possessive, words that compare, modals, problem words.

Book 3 (low-intermediate/intermediate): two-word verbs, past progressive, present perfect, problematic time words, adverbs of manner, too/for, adjectives, used to, infinitives, gerunds, adverbs of purpose, sentence connectors, relative clauses.

Book 4 (high-intermediate/low-advanced): past perfect tense, word forms, conditionals (if clauses and wish), adverb clauses, noun clauses, reduction of adjective and adverb clauses, past modals, subject-verb agreement, review of prepositions, and review of verb tenses.

The workbook listed with each textbook is the companion workbook, designed to accompany and supplement the textbook as extra practice. Only the textbooks include the grammar instruction.

More About the Author

I am a teacher by choice. I was born in New Orleans and grew up on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, which is really a linguistic extension of New Orleans. (Culturally, we had the same religion and the same food; I grew up on gumbo, jambalaya, and crawfish etoufee.) As a kid, I knew that we talked different. Beaucoup (boocoo), the neutral ground (the median in a road), and passing by someone's house (meaning: to stop and visit someone) were all a normal part of my dialect. I grew up primed to notice language nuances.

I love teaching. I've taught English as Second/Foreign Language in the US, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Kuwait, and Japan for more than 30 years. I've also taught French and Spanish. In addition, I've conducted teacher training workshops all over the globe, from Argentina to Uzbekistan. I'm certified secondary (English & French), and one of my favorite events is working with hundreds of K12 teachers every summer in Arkansas through an amazing program with the Arkansas Department of State. I am a frequent conference presenter and will be presenting at both CATESOL (member since 1997!) and TESOL in 2011.

At a very early age, I loved teacher worksheets. Teachers then passed out mimeographed handouts that they had run off on a spirit master machine. The handouts were a bluish-purple color, and they smelled GREAT! Teachers often arrived in class with last-minute handouts where the paper was still wet and the chemical smells were very strong. When a teacher passed out a worksheet, everyone was smelling the sheets.... but while my classmates continued with their handout-induced highs, I -- being a nerd -- was noticing the design of the worksheet. How did the teacher set up the matching activity? Terms on the left and definitions on the right? (Very American, I know now.) Or vice-versa? And where did the blanks go? And which words did she ask? It is no exaggeration to say that I really LOVED school. I LOVED those worksheets. I LOVED our workbooks. And so it's no wonder that at the age of 25, I published my first book. So far, I have published 34 books with the University of Michigan Press, 8 with Houghton Mifflin, 7 with Heinle Cengage, 1 with Longman, and my most recent book (VOCABULARY BUILDER, 2011) with Oxford University Press.

I have a BA in English with a minor in Secondary Education and French. I have an MA in TESOL. I also have a PhD in Second Language Acquisition and Instructional Technology. My main research areas are vocabulary and best teaching practices. I'm especially interested in experimental, quasi-experimental, and case study research on the teaching of grammar, the teaching of vocabulary, and error correction in second language composition.

Who knew that smelling the chemicals on worksheets in the 60s and 70s would lead me to be a textbook and workbook writer today? Well, they say that everything happens for a reason...

I hope you enjoy my learning materials. I am always open to hearing your suggestions for improving my work. Please feel free to contact me -- whether it is to comment on one of my books, ask about a research question, or invite me to participate at a conference in your area.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for older learners, May 4, 2001
By A Customer
I use this book with my adult ESL students. It is clearly written and extremely effective in reinforcing English grammar in an intelligent fashion. The content level is perfect for Non-English speaking older students. It addresses issues that a more mature student can relate to such as Geography or Current Events to cement a grammar concept rather than using balloons or puppies. It,also, employs different techniques and examples to do the same thing. I feel that my students are more interested in learning by using this book and that often the content encourages other English speaking activities.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great grammar book with tricky exercises, January 22, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
What makes this book so good is that the exercises are deliberately 'tricky'. By that I mean the exercises force students to pay attention to what they are doing; if they go too fast because they think they know everything, they make frequent mistakes. I've used a lot of grammar books with cookie-cutter exercises, and the students can rapidly figure out how to answer without thinking about it. Not so with this book. Students have to pay attention to EVERY response.

On top of the good exercises, the book's topics indicate that the author thought a great deal about what items should be included in level 1. I have a quibble here or there, but overall I think Folse made the right choices.

5.0 out of 5 stars Language development for Second Language students, September 15, 2008
By
I found this text originally in our library, and tried it out with several of my ESL students. Testing (included in the back of the book for placement purposes) showed gaps in their skills which had not been evident through our daily materials. I went back and re-taught lessons that had 2 of 2 missed questions, and did an oral review of units with a score of 1 out of 2. Students vocab and overall expressive skills have improved a LOT in the last 2 months! One drawback, I think, is the test. I have added a 3rd set of questions as I feel it's quite possible to guess correctly twice, but rare to guess correctly 3 times! I love being able to skip or skim areas that don't require direct teaching, because my students have very limited time to spend on their studies. I also like the fact that there are other support materials available. I feel much more effective as a teacher than peviously. Although this could not be used as a single text, it's a wonderful addition to our Program!
