5.0 out of 5 stars from a veteran (and skeptical) acne battler, January 8, 2005
This review is from: Clear Skin: Heal Your Skin and End the Breakouts- Once and for All (Paperback)
I have had acne since I was 12 (I am now 21), and I have to say that following the regimen prescribed in this book has made the most significant change in my skin in comparison to anything else I have tried, including more 'serious' approaches and medications such as accutane.

I'll be honest, using as much benzoyl peroxide as Dan recommends sucks, mostly because of the mild to moderate burning sensation and the dry skin that it leaves after applying the cream for about 20 minutes afterward. But it is worth it if you have struggled as much as I have with my moderate acne. According to Dan, the burning sensation is not that bad for most people, and I have found that after the initial few weeks on the regimen, the buring became more mild every day and easier to handle, as well as the dry skin. Benzoyl Peroxide also stains clothing a little, though I have not had much of a problem with it. It can also stain or bleach hair, but it is very minimal, and I have only experienced a few of my eyebrow hairs going from dark brown to blond, and even then it can only be noticed when scrutinizing them a few inces from a mirror.

I have found a couple of things that have helped: find a mild cleanser, really moisturizing lotion, and be as gentle with your skin as possible! (I like cetaphil, but experiment to find your own, and Dan sells his own 2.5% benzoyl peroxide cream online for a great price. he is not out to make huge amounts of money like others claiming to cure acne, such as ProActiv!) The difference between this acne regimen and others, such as Proactiv, is essentially the amount of benzoyld peroxide cream used and the elimination of manual and chemical exfoliation with AHA/BHA or salicylic acid products. Dan recommends applying about an ounce of bp cream each time, while most systems recommend only about a dime sized amount. (trust me, this is a drastic change!)

He explains exactly the reasoning and how to follow his guidelines in the book, so please(!) follow Dan's advice! Another point to keep in mind is almost everything in this book is online at acne.org for free, so please check out the site and it's great recommendations first before ordering the book! While this book and Dan's regimen offer relief for most acne sufferers, this is not a cure for acne but a way to manage it on a daily basis, and once under control, acne will most likely reappear if you stop the regimen and doing exactly what Dan tells you to do.

With that said, this regimen has helped to keep my skin clearer than anything that I have tried. I have been on almost every acne medication that can be prescribed, including accutane, and while they helped clear my skin to a degree, you can't stay on drugs indefinitely, and once I stopped them my acne would either immediately or eventually reappear just as badly or worse than it was before I was on the medications. This system is what is helping me keep my skin under control on a long term basis without the side effects of oral drugs.

4.0 out of 5 stars Could have got this information for FREE..., July 2, 2004

This review is from: Clear Skin: Heal Your Skin and End the Breakouts- Once and for All (Paperback)
off of the author's website www.acne.org. Each and everything in this book is on that website free of charge with a downloadable video (at the time of this review writing).

This "method" is similar to ProActiv's except a non-ProActiv brand of cleanser and benzoyl peroxide are used. Considerably more BP is applied with this method as well. Still this method will end up costing much less than ProActiv. Also, judging by the testimonials on here, in the actual book, and on acne.org, this method is rather successful for the long term.

Dan Kern's clear skin method treatment will lead to staining of pillowcases and apparel (especially if one has body acne), but some see that as a small price to pay for a clearer or completely clear complexion. Also as a heads up, this method is not intended for the "severe" acne cases.

I am most certainly NOT an advocate for the ProActiv system, which was not very effective for my moderate acne by the way.
Please understand- I am not trying to rain on the parade, but I am just listing some possibly negative points that were not mentioned in other reviews. I do wish someone had written about them, before I purchased this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, clear skin at age 52!, March 23, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Clear Skin: Heal Your Skin and End the Breakouts- Once and for All (Paperback)
I have had acne for about 40 years, but because of the treatment described in this book my skin is now clear. And I mean unbelievably clear.

Over the decades, I've used everything (except Accutane). Retin-A made my face red, oral antibiotics gave me yeast infections, and salicylic acid and other over-the-counter and mail-order products didn't do the job. I had even tried the product discussed in this book, but I had abandoned it because I didn't know how to use it SUCCESSFULLY.

In this book Dan Kern tells you exactly what to do to use benzoyl peroxide successfully. Just read the book and DO IT.

Since the first couple of weeks (the break-in period), I have not had to pop pimples -- that's one hobby I'm glad to give up. I actually get compliments on my skin now, and does that ever feel good.

I often see teenagers around town with skin like I used to have, and I want to tell them about this book, but I haven't because I don't want to make them feel like their poor skin is being inspected in public. Please, please -- librarians and school nurses -- buy this book and put it where kids will see it.

And if you're an adult and still having acne like I was, give this method a try. Nobody should have to deal with acne and wrinkles at the same time.

Many thanks to the author for making his findings available to the rest of us suffering mortals. This mortal now has less suffering!

I didn't read the whole book. I just went to web site acne.org and followed the program. Acne is now gone. I suffered from Acne for over 20 years and tried many treatment programs from Accutane, Retin-A, Microdermabrasion and a few others. Dan Kern's treatment program was the first treatment program that actually work for me in the long run.

The cheapest and fastest way I know how to check out the program is to order 1 tube of the 2.5% Benzoyl Peroxide (from Dan's Web Site) and try it for 1 week following Dan's instructions. Yes, if you goto the web site, Dan also wants you to get a Cleanser and a Moisturizer. All products are needed but I believe the key product is 2.5% benzoyl peroxide gel from his web site Acne.org.

I strongly believe if you have Ance, using the 2.5% benzoyl peroxide gel with Dan's instruction, you will have a 95% chance of seeing improvement in less than a week.

Dan's skin care regimen is the only thing that has worked for my acne - I tried everything from Proactiv to oral medications like Acutane. I've been caking on makeup for most of my life, since age 13, but now I finally can leave the house without it. Yes, I still break out a little before my monthly period, but otherwise, I'm all clear.
Dan Kern should win an award for his method, he is truly helping people, and not one of these Guthy Renker infomercial companies out for money. No celebrity endorsements needed; the clear skin regimen just works. I wish I had found it years ago.

This is the best book I've read about acne and treating it! I'm an esthetician and I recommend Dan's book and also his website (www.acne.org) to all my acne and acne-prone clients and just about anyone else that I meet or talk to that deals with acne and breakouts. Everyone should experience clear skin!

3.0 out of 5 stars Some observations, August 9, 2008
This review is from: Clear Skin: Heal Your Skin and End the Breakouts- Once and for All (Paperback)
Everything in this book, which basically explains the "clear skin" regimen, is available on Dan Kern's website (acne.org) for FREE, making this book a pointless purchase in itself.

That said, I have had some results with the "clear skin" regimen explained in the book, just not as good as others. Some things I've noticed after using the regimen:

PROS:

1) If you have never used benzoyl peroxide (2.5%) before, you will most likely get good results overall. You might even end up with a clear face, back, wherever.

2) You will appreciate Kern's empathy to the cause of acne elimination. Acne is very much an emotionally painful affliction, and empathy (not belittling) is sometimes the most important thing an acne sufferer needs.

3) When you are ready to begin the regimen, you can opt to visit Kern's website, which offers the regimen products (2.5% benzoyl peroxide, cleanser, moisturizer) at reasonable prices.

CONS:

1) Contrary to Kern's opinion, I personally have experienced my acne grow resistant to benzoyl peroxide (both 2.5% and 5% variations - 10% is too harsh). In my experience, the effectiveness of benzoyl peroxide waned after a few months, no matter how much of it I used.

2) Your skin can get seriously dried out by daily benzoyl peroxide use even with the "mild" 2.5% variation, especially since Kern eventually wants you to use about an ounce of it on your face. I used adequate-moderately heavy amounts of moisturizer after the benzoyl peroxide application, but personally there was just no escaping the dryness and peeling despite me having oily skin. Using less of the 2.5% treatment didn't help either.

3) Lastly, your clothes will bleach through benzoyl peroxide use, period. It's nice to have less acne, but when you notice your favourite clothes getting discoloured (ruined) in the process, it's almost not worth it in the end. Also, wouldn't you want to have clearer skin while wearing your favourite clothes? Sure, you could wear something under your clothes, but I personally found this to be an extra discomfort on top of my dried out face.

---

Still, I urge those who haven't used 2.5% benzoyl peroxide to try out the "clear skin" regimen. But instead of buying this book, I think you're better off buying the regimen treatment products on Amazon, or on Kern's website.

I urge you though to have realistic expectations with the regimen, as it may work at first but disappoint you afterwards.

1.0 out of 5 stars Another "cure" that doesn't treat the root of the problem..., November 19, 2009
This review is from: Clear Skin: Heal Your Skin and End the Breakouts- Once and for All (Paperback)
Desperately, I tried Dan Kern's Regimen. It DID completely clear my skin for about 6 weeks and worked better than any other external treatment I have ever tried. Unfortunately, I gradually started developing pimples/breakouts again and, no matter how much of the BP I applied to my skin, the pimples would NOT go away. In fact, the breakouts were so much more stubborn than they were BEFORE I started the treatment that NOTHING would make them go away. I had 2 huge pimples on the side of my face that took 6 MONTHS to dissipate! The problem with Dan's program is the same problem with all the other treatments...it may help for a week, a month, a year, whatever...but the acne is going to eventually return (unless you get to the root of the problem, which is INTERNAL). I also believe the treatment lotion damaged my skin and pigmentation...it is (finally) returning to normal, but has taken forever to do so. And I think the worst part of it all is that, when I stopped using the treatment, the breakouts not only returned, but with a vengeance. I sincerely hope that the treatment works better for you, but I can not recommend this method whatsoever.
