I purchased the four-piece version of this product (not currently available on Amazon from what I can tell). It is basically clear tape that you apply to the door edges. It does appear to protect the edges from damage. My only complaint is that I wish the tape was a little thicker to provide a little more cushion when your door happens to touch another car.

I can see the tape on my white car if I take a good look but it's hard to tell. I don't notice it at all anymore.

Tip - when you apply it, stretch it along the door frame - pull on it. The instructions also say to do this but I want to emphasize it. It helps produce a really good seal.

Overall - worth it.

This edge guard is a rather thick, clear tape that adheres to the edge of your door, in order to protect it from damage. I haven't made it a point to smash my door into anything, but i've had this product on for 6 months and so far it's holding up well to weathering. It all but disappears once installed and sticks like crazy. I chose to install it wet, as it allows a bit more time to position and get the air bubbles out. In a day or so, the moisture will escape and it will hold just as if it was installed dry.

If you can't apply scotch tape without messing it up, don't buy this. This is a great product, but you need to read the directions, follow them, and take your time. If you do it carefully, you'll have a professional-looking install at a low cost. If you're not the patient and handy type, find a friend who is. Buy them a beer, then give them a pair of scissors and a spray bottle. Maybe not in that particular order...

October 2011 Update:

Some folks have commented that this stuff isn't all too durable. I'm starting to agree, but also don't know what else would really replace this product. I've since replaced my original installation, as the "pointy" part on my door edge did wear through all the way. I open my doors very carefully, but i do own a 2-door car (long doors). When i park in your typical California "compact" space, there isn't much room to open the door. I often have to let my door touch the adjacent car. This light use has led to the material wearing through after a few months of use. For this reason, i've knocked my review down to 4/5 stars.

Removing the old product was easy and it came off cleanly. I've since redone both door edges with a new strip of material.

Applied this to a couple Pottery Barn children's desk chairs that were chipping when the edges came in contact with the counter top. The Xpel film stretches allowing you to keep the material flat with the surface while making tight bends. Noticed as I was removing a few spots to reset the film it was taking paint with it, but I attribute this to the chair manufacturing rather than the Xpel film. After applying, you are barely able to see the film and it works terrific. I can think of a dozen other uses for this... definitely not an auto-specific product.

I had purchased this product before directly from Xpel's site for my car and it was great. The roll I purchased here for my wife's car and this roll was not the same quality. The two roles were different even the cardboard piece in the center was different. I had some left from the first roll and used it on one door, the roll I purchased here on the other three. The other three started pealing off and they flaking on the edges. I thing this may be a fake. I would recommend going to Xpel's site to purchase and not here.

I found out about this product after purchasing my wife a car last winter and the dealer threw in a "free" door protection kit (I know nothing is free with them). I researched the product and found out it was made from Xpel. I ordered my first one to put it onto my civic and it went on pretty smooth. Just be sure to keep the tape taught or they'll start sticking together. Keeping it slightly stretched also help it go on smoother (less bulging). It's lot less obvious than other door edge protectors. It seemes to work well so when I bought a new car last month (had to give my 4-year old civic EX to my daughter who's starting her 2nd year in college) I ordered this again. Also I bought their Rocker panel guard to protect my front end from small rocks and debris and my trunk...

The idea, while great, is not the greatest in execution because the manufacturer has chosen to only make the tape 3/8 inch wide. When you bend this in half to fit your door edge, it really doesn't leave much to work with...less than 2/16 inch on each side. Add to that the thickness of the door edge and there is even less. It amazes me how companies try to save a few fractions of a penny to increase their bottom line, and leave it to the consumer to fend for themselves, in this case, to install this to look nicely, while not having much to grab onto. I only did about 8 inches of my door edge, where my door would make first contact. It's clear, so that's good and my tape is nearly invisible. But good luck trying to tape this down your entire door frame without messing up because it's not wide enough.
