Clearing Hurdles: The Quest to Be The World's Greatest Athlete

This book is a must read for not only every aspiring athlete, but for anyone who loves a true story of loss and failure, human perseverance, and ultimately achievement and success. A story of how a small child that was adopted into a family of multiracial adopted kids in a small northwestern town, overcame all obstacles and struggles in his life, to ultimately become a three time World Champion and the 1996 Olympic Gold Medalist in the Decathlon. You've got to read this raw story of Dan O'Brien's life and how Dan beat all odds along the way. Dan came back from one of the most publicized failures in athletic history, to being eventually hailed as, " The World's Greatest Athlete!".
A truly inspiring book in many ways !

"I was a screw up, but athletically talented. I blew off a lot of opportunities, then got it together, got really famous, then became the champion of champions."

Sometimes encouraging, sometimes disappointing, but always interesting, Dan's story isn't too different from a lot of other elite athletes. It is a reminder that our sports stars shouldn't be expected to be role models AND that the gifts you were born with pretty much determine how high you could fly. He makes an excellent testament to the patience and skill of his coaches with this book and to the chaotic love his family offered - but otherwise, this is about what you would expect from an Olympic champion's biography.

This biography will captivate a wide audience whether they are athletic or not. Dan O'Brien may be the "world's greatest athlete", but more importantly, he exemplifies the value of character in how he handles the process that it takes to achieve such a title. It's a breath of fresh air to read about someone who continues to take another step forward under difficult circumstances, never allowing excuses to get in the way. Dan assumes and shoulders all the responsibility when he fails, yet when he succeeds; he never fails to give credit to those who helped him. Many of us may never have the perseverance to make our own dreams come true, but after you finish this book, you will definitely revisit those dreams and have a newfound motivation to make them come true. This story is nothing less than inspirational! Brad Botkin has the ability to not just tell Dan's story, but to leave the reader with the feeling that they have personally been involved in the journey.
