5.0 out of 5 stars Great Little Laser
At the time I bought it, it was selling for 4.95. Even now it's listed at 9.95 it's a great deal. I have had several lasers but this one is great. It takes 2 aaa batteries which last a very long time.......much longer that I would have thought. The dot is bright red and is very simple to use. 1.0 out of 5 stars Crummy laser pointer -- DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!
The ClearLine model 2001 is a very lame laser pointer. First of all, it is only rated at 3.5mW, rather than the much more typical <5mW output power provided by other laser pointers. Secondly, it emits a 650nm red beam, which is far less bright than the "bright red" laser pointers that emit at 635nm. You wouldn't think that 15nm here or there would make...

You wouldn't think that 15nm here or there would make much difference, but believe me, it does. On the same general topic, make sure to avoid any red laser pointer that emits at 670nm -- they are way too dark.

Laser pointers are a lot of fun, but I *HIGHLY* recommend green laser pointers (emitting at 532nm)over red laser pointers. The human eye is something like 40 times more sensitive to the greenn wavelength than to red, and with a good green laser pointer, you can actually see the beam sslicing through the night sky, which is VERY cool.

Unfortunately, green laser pointers are much more expensive than red laser pointers. If you want an inexpensive laser pointer, try to find a red pointer emitting at 635nm with an output power of no less than <5mW !!! Under no circumstances would I recommend the ClearLine model 2001 laser pointer, however. I bought it, and it is far, far less bright than any of the other red laser pointers I have. You can find much better red laser pointers in the same general price range with a little searching around.

3.0 out of 5 stars ok... at first, May 27, 2001
This review is from: Clearline CL2001 Pen Shaped Laser (Office Product)
I got this laser a few days ago, and after 3 days it has stoped working. It will go on every now and then, but it is pretty inconsistant. This may be due to the button or somthing inside. Also, amazon claims it has a range of 1,500 YARDS. but the package says 1,500 FEET. No big deal, since when it does work it is pretty bright. All in all, you get what you pay for, if you want one that will last, try the sharper immage ones, i bought one 5 years ago and it still works to this day.

1.0 out of 5 stars what a piece of junk!, May 5, 2003

After I got it, I put a brand new battery in and it lasted for a loooong 12 seconds and after that it was DEAD. I thought I put in a faulty battery so I replaced it with another new one. Nothing happened. It was really DEAD. Please don't waste your money.

After reading the other reviews of this product, I was a bit leary, but decided it was worth taking a chance on since the price was low. Frankly, I'm quite pleased with it. The product description says it has a range of 1500 yards, which is clearly incorrect, but 1500 feet, in low light or darkness, does sound accurate. The unit feels solid, and the on/off switch clicks solidly. The colimnating optics aren't the greatest, so the beam does tend to spread out a bit, especially at distances greater than 500 feet, but this isn't meant to be some sort of fine scientific instrument, so that's no big deal. I did notice the beam flickering a bit after a bit of use, but I replaced the very poor batteries that were included with a good set of name brand batteries, and the beam became much more intense and rock solid steady. I recommend this unit!

2.0 out of 5 stars Low quality !, January 2, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Clearline CL2001 Pen Shaped Laser (Office Product)
Although this laser pointer is cheap, it is certainly low quality. Only 5 MINUTES after the package was opened, it began to malfunction. I have to press the botton really hard, and on the left side instead of the center, to make it work. Also it is very light and feels more like plastic or aluminum than 'solid brass'. Haven't got a chance to test standard AAA battery compatibility yet, but this was pointed out in other reviews. Conclusion: NOT RECOMMENDED.

1.0 out of 5 stars optically ok, mechanically -- TRASH, May 22, 2003

One of the owners had his unit die after a week -- mine died within 30 minutes. On investigation, installing fresh batteries caused so much resistance heating that the aluminum case became impossible to hold -- CAN YOU SAY FIRE HAZARD? The reason for this was that the flimsy spring used to compress the batteries had shifted and lodged against the aluminum case causing a short circuit. There should be a 0.1 cent plastic sleeve to prevent this. This product should be recalled and trashed. I'd send it back -- but I used a tubing cutter to find out what was wrong. At least it won't be re-sold to some other dupe. You really do get what you pay for.

I wanted a laser pointer for a very simple purpose -- my cat loves chasing the dot. So illumination specs, range, battery life, none of that stuff really mattered. I just needed a red dot for my cat to chase. In this I was disappointed. This pointer had trouble early on -- I'd have to depress the button some certain, arbitrary way to get it to work. After about a month it stopped working altogether -- I gave it fresh batteries, everything. It's busted, I'm on Amazon right now buying a new (different) one. Steer clear.
