We are really please with our Clearplay. With 2 teens in the house it opens up doors for them to watch current videos that we don't have to stress about. The quality of the picture and sound has been the same as a regular DVD.

I have owned this product for 30 days now and have played approximately 15 DVD's of all sorts in it. Rated G to PG-13. Most movies have had filters for them and worked great.

Pro's
Automatically filters out offensive content such as sex, violence, profanity, etc. Multiple level settings for each filter.

Con's
Slight hesitation when...

So sorry to hear other reviews on this product that are negative. We bought ours two years ago in January and have loved it! Our first one had an issue after a year. I contacted ClearPlay and they immediately sent out a replacement with no questions asked. Mind you...that was AFTER a year had passed. I think their customer service is excellent. I'm buying another one for my sister's family. I recommend this product to everyone! I want to buy a second one for our upstairs loft tv too.

Not all movies have filters yet
After 30 days, my player died, I just received an RMA from ClearPlay to get another player... Hopefully I just received a bad unit...

The Clearplay DVD player itself is nice. However, I've been VERY disappointed with its customer service. First, a salesperson told my brother (who had bought the player for me) that he would be getting a deal where if he bought 2 players, he would also get 2 one year free memberships. Did not happen--instead, they only gave us 1 month free, even though he had bought 2 players.

Next, my Clearplay tray would not open after a very short time of having it. I was told that I could send the player back and get a new one...but Clearplay makes the consumer, who only had the faulty player for a short while, pay for the shipping to send it back to Clearplay (even though the salesman told me that my DVD player was part of a batch of faulty players they had sold).

There were other instances in which the person I talked to on the phone had told me one thing and then a different thing had happened, to the customer's loss and to Clearplay's benefit. Very poor customer service.

I have been a fan, follower, and customer of ClearPlay since the early 2000s. I was a customer when the service was still PC based. I love the service. This specific player, however, is very poor quality. I purchased one and experienced noticable audio distortion. I contacted ClearPlay (I have met the founders and the former CEO) and they sent me a replacement unit (for that, I'm appreciative.) The unit they sent me was defective (the DVD tray wouldn't open). Then, before Christmas 2008, they ran a promotion to get a free year's subscription to the service with the purchase of the player. Since the subscription and the player are about the same cost, I figured I would renew my subscription anyway, so I bought a new player. It had even worse audio distortion than the first unit.

As a result, I'm very hesitant to plunk down another $100 on a different player. Perhaps a different model will be better; perhaps it won't. I'm just not sure I'm willing to take the risk.

I researched this pretty well before buying and my research said - "Don't Buy." But I really liked the idea of the ClearPlay and wanted it to work so bad. We bought one of these so we could watch more movies. We do not watch any "R" movies in our home and even PG-13 are mostly unacceptable.

The quality of the device is bad. Very slow and quirky. After 6 months it does not even work.

The filtering is great, but not all movies play the best - lots of brief freezes and some skips. One of my movies does not play at all in the player.

Customer service is very poor. If they talk to you at all they don't follow through. But good luck even getting a response.

Clearplay Filtering DVD Player (with 1 Year Subscription)DO NOT PURCHASE THIS ITEM FROM ANY MERCHANT. I PURCHASED ONE THROUGH AN AMAZON DEALER. I HAD NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS FROM THE BEGINNING. FIRST OF ALL, THE ITEM IS MADE IN CHINA. THE FIRST ONES WERE OF VERY POOR QUALITY AND THE IMPORTER HAD TO CHANGE MANUFACTURERS. AFTER A GOOD LONG WAIT, I FINALLY RECEIVED MY ORDER. I ORDERED A ONE YEAR SUBSCRIPTION. I HAD A TECHNICIAN CONNECT THE PLAYER TO MY TV. WHEN I ATTEMPTED TO ACCESS THE CLEARPLAY SITE TO REGISTER THE PRODUCT AND DOWNLOAD SOME MOVIES, ALL I RECEIVED WERE THE FOLLOWING NOTICES "INVALID LOGIN AND "MEMBERSHIP HAS EXPIRED". MY E MAILS, PHONE CALLS AND A LETTER TO THE PRESIDENT OF CLEARPLAY WENT UNANSWERED. I CONTACTED THE MERCHANT FROM WHOM I PURCHASED THE PRODUCT WHO CONTACTED CLEARPLAY ON MY BEHALF. THEIR PHONE CALLS WENT UNANSWERED. CLEARPLAY IS A SMALL BUSINESS WITH ABOUT 13 PEOPLE. I AM NOT ALONE IN MY OPINION ABOUT CLEARPLAY. IF YOU WILL READ THROUGH SOME OF THE OTHER REVIEWS ABOUT CLEARPLAY, YOU WILL FIND THAT MANY OTHERS HAVE APPARENTLY EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEMS.
