From the Label

RykoLatino is thrilled to announce the release of Roberto Clemente: A Musical Tribute. It is doubtful there is any athlete more admired and revered than Roberto Clemente as both a player and as a man. In this year, which marks the 25th anniversary of his tragic death many people have come forward to pay homage to this remarkable leader. RykoLatino was offered the unprecedented opportunity to produce this landmark recording and we leapt at the chance. As it came together it became clear that this record was destined to be viewed as a historic touchstone for potentially millions of people from every corner of the globe who hold a place in their hearts for Roberto Clemente.

When a host of musicians, singers, composers and arrangers who're universally recognized as undisputed leaders in their respective fields wanted to be involved with this recording it was clear this was an idea whose time had definitely come. From Andy Montanez and Ismael Miranda to Larry Harlow and Luis "Perico" Ortiz this is a project which demands the attention of every fan of Tropical Latin sounds whether they're Latino, Eskimo or Senegalese.

Naturally, word of this undertaking spread quickly through Major League Baseball as well. This project has indeed taken on a life of its own. What Jackie Robinson was to African-American players, Roberto Clemente was for Latino players, he kicked open the door of opportunity for many others that deserved their shot at the brass ring. People will be listening to and talking about this album for years to come, order it today and see for yourself why this is not just another CD, this is one for the record books.

Format: Audio CD
Ismael Miranda who sings "Roberto" and Andy Montanez who interprets "Roberto y Tirabala" still sound as good as ever, and for the most part, the album holds up well. Although, the track "Jugando La Pelota" sounds like it was haphazardly pieced together, and I found it strange that the ballad, "Lo Mejor Que Dios Ha Hecho" makes no real reference to Roberto Clemente. This track, although quite lovely, sounds as if it was a last minute "throw-in" on the album. Overall though, the love and respect for this great Latin Sports Figure shines through on the project. Pay particular attention to "Somos La Fuerza Latina" which highlights the contributions of all Spanish countries to the great sport of baseball.
