I've followed Khari Cabral's career for a few years. Maybe he was known as Khari Cabral Simmons, or Khari Simmons in the past. He has a firm foot planted in the music industry and maybe more notably, the wonderful Atlanta Neo-Soul scene. From his work with Jiva, which I discovered a little later in 2006 to his collaboration with Julie Dexter in "Moon Bossa", he's carved out a nice niche. But maybe what I've enjoyed most is that he is willing to incorporate different musical styles and approaches into his own music and his brand of fusion is quite good and underrated. So here we have him with "Clementine Sun". How does it stack up to some of his earlier works/collaborations?

Rather well! Considering he was such a creative force in all of those projects, including work with India Arie, it comes as no surprise. You have a nice album that does not stray too far from what made Jiva such a success while at the same time firmly planting a unique stamp that is entirely his. The title track is the perect intro with whispy vocals layered over nice musicianship and a gentle loungish bossa beat. That's followed up with India Arie making an appearance for a nice, slowed down version of Stevie Wonder's "Never In Your Sun". It is a nice take, again with bossa. "Coolamon Waltz" has all of the dreaminess I came to admire in Jiva's music, namely the 'Twilight' bossa effect, though obviously not a bossa. Get Back featuring Chantae Cann was quite nice, and I also enjoyed the Barbara Mendes-esque "Belle of Byron Bay" featuring Monday Michiru. It has a real clean, crisp feel to it. But I think the real gem on this album has to be the last song, Major Bossa. It features none other than Sabrina Malheiros on vocals (Far Out Records).

I went to a jazz concert in Atlanta last year and Khari Cabral and crew played most of this album and sold it after the show. I purchased 4 copies. I was overwhelmed by the stage presence and the way the music was delivered. I have been listening to jazz my entire life and this album is one of my favorites. Please get this album!!! You will not be disappointed.
