3.0 out of 5 stars Probably okay for general knowledge
I bought this book to learn more specifically about celiac disease and hypothyroidism and didn't learn anything new. It is probably a good general book about thyroid problems, but didn't have the information I was seeking.

Mario Skugor, MD, and Jessee Bryant Wilder have compiled an easy to understand guide to thyroid disorders.

The handy ten chapter format makes it easy for the reader to select those chapters which interest her.

Chapter 1 explains the function of the thyroid.

Chapters 2-5 are devoted to underactive and overactive thyroids and their treatment.

Chapter 6 describes the tests for thyroid disease.

Chapter 7 details nodules and goiters.

Chapter 8 discusses thyroid cancers.

Chapter 9 focuses on pregnancy and the thyroid.

And Chapter 10 discusses controversies in thyroid treatment and diagnosis. Weight gain/loss and nutritional supplements are also explained.

The chapters on Hypothyroidism helped me understand both when to take my medication and which medications are considered effective. It also made me aware of the dangers of changing drugs. I now know what to do if I forget to take my meds (something my physician had never mentioned).

This Cleveland Clinic guide is clearly written and addresses the issues that concern a thyroid patient. It was exactly what I was looking for.

I bought this book for a friend who had many questions about the condition of her thyroid. All symptoms can be explained here, in lay person's terms. The book helped my friend understand this condition well enough to understand her doctor, as well as even make suggestions regarding her treatment. Highly recommend this book.

A wealth of information - things your GP doesn't have time to advise you on. A great reference book (one of a few I have purchased) for someone like me who has just been diagnosed with Hypothyroidism.
