About the Author

Shawn Patrick Hoefler is the webmaster of clevelandskyscrapers.com, a not-for-profit website that provides information and images of high-rise architecture in northeast Ohio. This book presents quality images, both contemporary and vintage, and a well-written narrative describing downtown Cleveland's buildings and other landmarks and their histories. It's interesting reading and visually appealing and a good introduction to one of America's most under-appreciated cities.

First I want to say that I think it's great that someone took the time to compile all these photos and present all the great buildings Cleveland has to offer. However, there are a few things I wish I had known before buying this particular book:

First and foremost, there are a couple of glaring errors in the book. One caption misidentifies the Quicken Loans arena as the Cleveland State Convocation Center. There is also a page in the book that has the same photo printed twice, each with a caption identifying the photos as two different things. Errors such as these make me wonder if other entries are misidentified as well.

Second, the book is poorly writen. Several of the captions have missing words or misplaced commas. You can still understand what the sentence is trying to say (with no trouble at all), but it's just a little annoying when you come across a sentence that's missing an "of" or something like that.

Three, the captions are not objective. The book really reads like you are listening to a tour guide speak (which I guess makes sense as the author is a tour guide) with anecdotes and opinions. It's not really a negative ... it's just not what I was expecting.

I am enjoying the photos in the book very much. However, I find it a bit annoying that they don't give the exact address and year built for each building.
