Book Description

October 15, 2012
Cleveland's West Side Market is a matchless culinary and cultural resource, a nationally significant architectural treasure, and part of the city's distinctive urban landscape. In continuous use since it opened in 1912, the market is among the oldest municipally owned and operated retail food arcades and one of only a handful of such places left in the country. The book chronicles the history of this notable landmark and all it offers consumers and culinary aficionados. Written by two well-known Cleveland food writers, the book takes readers on a nostalgic tour of the market building, outdoor arcades, and into the lives of many vendors and market families who are the true foundation of this historic public space. The volume is rich with many rare, and until now unpublished, vintage and contemporary photographs, and images that provide a delightful armchair tour of this magnificent landmark, which is a must-see destination for food lovers.

Fabulous book with many great pictures and memories. Gave this as Christmas gifts to my Aunt and a dear friend, both which were thrilled with the book. Beautifully written, telling the stories of a 100 year old market in the great City of Cleveland.

3.0 out of 5 stars Book is Overrated May 15, 2013
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
The book is OK; I am very glad I purchased it at a discount on Amazon and not at full price at a local bookstore with author signing. My recollection of the West Side Market, going every single Saturday, from the time I was a child until I went away to the university, are more distinct than most listed in the book. Many ethnic groups are not included, and it may be due to the fact of the lack of research by the author. The author may have wanted to consider the Cleveland Cultural Gardens as representative of the people of Cleveland, in its 100 years of existence, who shop and have shopped at the WSM (there are 28 ethnicities represented at the CCG). The author missed the boat on that, big time. There are better stories to be shared, by cultures not shared in the book. I now know not to purchase additional copies as gifts.
