5.0 out of 5 stars The Next Wave is the real thing!
This is an excellent follow up to Clickers. The action picks right up on page 1 and does not stop until the last words. Even after you are done you want more.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sometimes they come back
Like a really bad movie byline, the best way I can think of to describe "Clickers II: The Next Wave" is with the words "just when you thought they were dead, they come back."

Much like the first one, "Clickers II" follows the same slasher/horror formula of cheesy b-grade films. Back are the Clickers, the Dark Ones, Rick Sycheck, and the over the top, gore fest...

Just finished Clickers II: The Next Wave and I was very impressed with the story all-around. I feel its strength lies in the B-story of the book. A religious president slowly being claimed by insanity, seems like a tactic that King would use.

Summary: So it is about a decade later after the events of Phillipsport, ME. We learn about the government doing its best to cover up the incident through various newspaper clippings. Then we are thrust to present day where a large hurricane is baffling meteorologists with its trajectory. Then the Clickers strike. Following the rules of a sequel, the Clickers are bigger, badder, and more pissed off. They strike at various points of the Eastern Seaboard. We meet the White House Cabinet and President Tyler. Tyler sees this as his opportunity to set the country onto the path of being Saved. The Clickers raise hell and are followed by The Dark Ones who are seeking revenge for being hunted by the military back in Phillipsport. Amongst the war breaking out is Colonel Livingston. He quickly takes control of the battle and he soon finds himself fighting a two-sided war. On one side are the deadly Clickers and the Dark Ones, but also a civil war between the followers of President Tyler.

This book is very character driven. The favorite of mine is President Tyler. He becomes unpredictable in his stead-fast plan to Save the country. The reader quickly grows to hate him and hence why I love him. His character evokes the most emotion out of all of the cast. Rick Sychek returns with his woeful tale of living underground from threat of government assassination. We learn that things did not turn out all that great for the survivors of Phillipsport. There are other characters that I enjoyed. Colonel Livingston started to become too cliched for my taste. Either way this is a great sequel and I cannot wait for Clickers III to be made available onto Kindle.

The best news of all is that Clickers vs. Zombies is currently in the works by both of the great authors.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun read., January 16, 2009

This is a wonderful sequel to Clickers by JF Gonzalez and Mark Williams. It is over the top, terrifying death and destruction, and hilarious in an 80s, B movie kind of way. The most horrifying part was definitely the president, because people like him could come into power in our country. Now that is what nightmares are made of. JF Gonzalez and Brian Keene are an unstoppable force within the horror genre, and I can't wait for the third installment of Clickers.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sometimes they come back, July 13, 2011
This review is from: Clickers II: The Next Wave (Paperback)
Like a really bad movie byline, the best way I can think of to describe "Clickers II: The Next Wave" is with the words "just when you thought they were dead, they come back."

Much like the first one, "Clickers II" follows the same slasher/horror formula of cheesy b-grade films. Back are the Clickers, the Dark Ones, Rick Sycheck, and the over the top, gore fest. Even another hurricane makes it's destructive appearance.

While there are many of the same elements here, "Clickers II" is a much better written book than the first one. The plot and characters are richer and more in-depth, and even if they are extremely cliched and unbelievable (just look at President Tyler and his insanity) they make a stronger and ore enjoyable reading experience. Also gone is the boring and repetitive language. I don't know if Mark Williams was responsible for the laziness of the first one but it's obvious bringing Brian Keene on board after Williams's passing was a smart and very successful venture.

Like "Clickers" before it, "Clickers II: The Next Wave" was far from a bestselling novel of greatness, but it was entertaining and easy to read. "Clickers III" and "Clickers vs Zombies" will defiantly be high on my reading wish list now.

3.0 out of 5 stars Lukewarm follow up, but the political commentary was uneccessary, September 19, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This follow-up to the campy "Clickers" started out great - the action started right away, and kept on going through the whole book. However, my major problem with this book was the political ideology in the story - it was such a distraction from what would otherwise have been a fun, campy monster story. President Tyler was such an obnoxious caricature of a right wing religious zealot that it was so unbelievable - it really took away from the storline. Overall, this was not as good as its predecessor, mainly because of the blatant insertion of the author's political ideology, and the ridiculous characterization of the right-wing president.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gonzalez/Keene, The Next Wave, October 15, 2011
This review is from: Clickers II: The Next Wave (Paperback)
The Next Wave was very good. I will say that first before I begin criticizing it. The only reason why I feel I have to is because, in my opinion, it fell well short of the first clickers novel for several reasons. The first is perhaps my fault. Maybe I shouldn't have dived right into this book after finishing a five star read like Clickers (I). Maybe I was just a little burnt out on giant monster B-movie plots but I don't think that was it. I think it is the lack of masterful characterization which made the first Clickers novel so enjoyable for me. There were a few scenes that I found completely over the top and not in a good way, like Tim and Rick's "ordeal," and there didn't seem to be very many main characters. All of them felt like minor characters about whom I didn't care in the slightest.

My only other complaint is that, like many open-ended horror novels, Clickers (I) was fine that way. I did not feel disappointed. We know at the end of the first novel that there is a good chance it could all happen again but we don't know for sure. I think of The Mist by King which, unlike the movie, does not provide us with a conclusion at all. Clickers isn't that open-ended but I do not think it was a good idea to continue the series. The Next Wave was a fun read, hell I gave it four stars because of that, but a lot of the charm was missing. I had much higher expectations for this, especially with Brian Keene in on it, but it let me down a bit. Still, very fun book and I will read Dagon Rising eventually. I am not going to track it down any time soon though.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clicker Carnage continues, July 31, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Clickers II: The Next Wave (Paperback)
In the second installment of the Clickers series, J.F. Gonzalez is joined by Brian Keene, and all mayhem breaks loose. The U.S. has suffered a gigantic hurricane, and what could be even worse? That same hurricane is driving the Clickers species back on land to once again attack the human race. The president is an insane religious fanatic that doesn't believe the U.S. is coming under attack from crab/scorpion like creatures, and is completely oblivious to the needs of his fellow Americans. The Clickers though are being led on land by a force unseen, and their intentions are clear : take over the land of Americans for their own, by any means necessary. The gory horror continues with the second book in the series, and definitely does not disappoint one bit. Fast paced and page turning, this is a must for horror fans!

4.0 out of 5 stars The real terror here is humanity, July 11, 2011

The Xylanic spoiler free drilldown:

Hello, faithful readers, Xylanic is here once again to give you his thoughts on the sequel to the excellent Clickers, Clickers 2. If you've read my review for the original you will see that I was quite pleased with the overall character development and structure of the original and I'm happy to say that the sequel does not cause any disappointment. Firstly, Brian Keene, well known for his excellent Zombie novels The Rising and City of the Dead and not as well known for A Gathering of Crows and Darkness on the edge of town (But equally excellent) is the co author on this sequel due to the passing of the original's co author. Fans of Brian will see his influence right away as Brian is skilled at introducing character's with depth and background and then slicing them into various pieces.

Clickers 2 is set on a much broader scale than the original novel as the creatures launch an all out attack on the East coast. Without giving specific spoilers, some of the most fun moments of the novel are set in major cities such as Atlantic City, Baltimore and Washington D.C. as the aforementioned Clickers cause havoc. The author's goal of having one flash back to classic monster movies truly shines during the novel's opening act and the creatures opening siege of the East Coast, told through various character viewpoints. The carnage and destruction is on a much larger and much more grotesque scale than the original and the novel feels even more fun as a result.

The true star of this novel however is not the creatures but once again the characters, specifically the President and a man named Tim. These two characters are the most horrifying creations of the author's as they show that despite what the forces of nature may throw at us, humanity's dark side holds the greatest threat during times of turmoil. As the invasion by the Clickers pick up, the depths of depravity and religious persecution that the aforementioned characters delve into cause the most sickening and horrifying moments of the novel. The President in particular will stick with you for a long time as he has a method for his madness and truly believes that the actions he takes during the novel are in the best interest for his nation.

Xylanic gives this one Four Stars and ensures that if you enjoyed the original or just enjoy end of the world type novels you will love this one!
